Solution Session 2 Questions

(INSS 300)

Q3.Represent number in ASCII

ASCII code consists of 8 bits for a byte

Last four are used to represent numbers

______

Each digit has a “weight” which relates to 2 power its position

______

23 22 21 20

8 4 2 1

Following this logic

4560 can be represented as by “turning” the bit(s) to 1 to represent the desired digit
4 = 0011 0100
5 = 0011 0101
6 = 0011 0110
0 = 0011 0000

since there are 4 numbers It would take 4 bytes to send 4560

Q1 and 2

SCM, CRM and ERP are well defined in the book.

Some of the usage of SCM and CRM

Wal-Mart use SCM by

integrating suppler in their value chain.

Keeping track of inventories

Use just-in-time approach to keep inventory at minimum

Shifts inventory carrying costs to suppliers (Wal-Mart) since they must conform to WM’s procurement system and use RFID tags to do business with them

Wal-Mart use CRM

To study customer, what is selling and what the customer want

What new products to add, what products to delete

What marketing efforts are needed for what market segment

“service” is becoming important because customers have many choices, especially WM since they sell mostly generic products

ERP systems are useful for “overall” integration of an organization. Peoplesoft is an example of ERP software. ERP integrate all functional areas and provide standardization

Which is, especially useful if organizations are designed by product.

All employees get the same information, so there is information integrity

Seamless Integration..implies linking systems together that require minimal human intervention. An example would be exporting WORD file in EXCEL or POWERPOINT, there is minimal user involvement.

Similarly if Supplier and business systems are integrated seamlessly, any time an inventory falls below certain number at the business, the supplier starts replenishing it and automatically send the bill to the accounting department. The whole order, manufacturing, billing and payment is done automatically..

Discuss q2 and q6/p57

Standardization is important since it provides seamless integration between suppliers and company and introduces “efficiency” in SCM. It is a win-win situation since Coke has to deal with only one type of bottling platforms and bottlers are getting most likely free software. Also see first paragraph page 57 for importance of standardization. It is most likely that Coke doesl NOT charge since it is in their interest to deal with one platform and not cater to different platforms through their SCM.

Coke can collect all kind of information about its best clientele. Using Bi, they can find what excites their loyal customers. Is it coupons, rewards, discounts etc. Once they know, they can use target marketing to generate more revenues.

In addition, some of your classmates posted excellent responses. I am listing a few:

2. Why is standardization so important in supply chain management?
Standardization is very important, as is allows all departments within a business to communicate effectively and efficiently. SCM track activities through an entire company and for it to run more efficiently standardization will help immensely. I would imagine that Coke will charge the suppliers for these services, so that every company is using the same software, therefore creating standardization. If a company is not willing to use this software, Coke will probably find other suppliers. That wouldn’t be smart knowing that Coke is the second best selling packed goods dealer besides Kraft.

Standardization is important in supply chain management because it help to smooth out the activities that it process for business partners which can translate to higher efficiency. It is a way to help businesses to smooth out their operation globally.
Question 2 (2nd question of question 2 ) Coke is developing its own set of software services for bottlers to use. Do you think Coke charges the bottlers for these software services? Why or why not?
After reading the article in the textbook talking about the bottlers of Coke talking that is the independent franchise operation. It is a way for the franchise to smooth out a chain store to send out the products.
Many businesses have been granting franchise to many independent owners, Coke owned the rights and trademarks of the company product which help those independent owners to use their trademark to run the business. In the result, it bring huge success to Coke so Coke do not have to go all the way to do their work, allow their franchise owners do most of the works globally. Coke earn profit from charge franchises the upfront franchise fee to use their name and collecting an royalty fee from the franchise.
That is why Coke is a huge success of using supply chain management.

Q6

Coke can get data on drink and buying patterns by tracking information through sales and website. The information will go in the database so that Coke can bring up the data what is going on with the customers.
It can use this information for customer relationship management activities in order to get in touch with their customers and be doing great with their business

Coke can find out where their target market lies through the My Coke Rewards process. People will claim prizes that they find important, and from this Coke can find out where their advertising money should be spent. If people want American Idol gear, Coke should be sure to have Coke commercials during the American idol show. We gain insight about the customers and effectively use CRM.
