Engage: Flocabulary Video:
  1. What time would it be in 5 minutes if it is 11:45? (11:50)
  2. What time was it 5 minutes ago if it is 6:15? (6:10)
  3. What value does the long hand have on an analog clock? (it represents minutes)
  4. What value do the numbers behind the colon have on a digital clock? (they represent minutes)

Explain:
  • Begin with the “Introduction” part of the CPALMS lesson where students practice skip counting.
  • Next, say “3:45” and students should model on their clocks, observe students to see who will need additional support.
  • Repeat with “11:55.”
  • Next, with a shoulder partner, students take turns explaining how to tell time to the fives, they must include the placement of the hour hand.
  • Teacher will also review the following vocabulary:
  • Analog clock - a clock that has moving hands and hours and is marked 1 – 12, digital clock - a clock that does not have hands but shows numbers, A.M. - the time before noon, P.M. - the time after noon

  • Watch the What Time Is It Mr. Crocodile Video:
  • Students should be in heterogeneous pairs. Lay out the 3X5 index cards with the numerals that skip count by 5’s up to 60 in a large circle (as large as possible).
  • Let the students know you are “Mr./Mrs. Crocodile”. Call out the numeral 5 or 10.
  • Student pairs move in intervals of 5 or 10 minutes from where they are standing on the clock. When you hold up the green card, that is the signal to move. When you hold up the red card, that is the signal to stop. When you stop, hold up an hour card, this is the hour every pair will use when drawing their hands on a clock. Partners turn and talk to each other and agree on the number of minutes it would be on a clock where they are standing.
  • Students record their time on the Blank Analog Clocks document. Repeat.
  • For example, if pairs land on “55” and you hold up the “1” card, that pair of students would draw the hands for “1:55” on their Blank Analog Clocks document. Each pair of students will have different times to record because each pair of students will be on a different interval of 5. Repeat several times until all clocks have been filled in making sure to hold up a different hour card each time.
  • Circulate as students draw their hands to provide immediate feedback.
