To Parents/Students:

Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29, as a service to the public and non-public schools, operates Academic Summer School. Academic Summer School provides: (a) remediation for students who failed courses during the school year and (b) enrichment for students who want to get a head start on classes for the following school year.

Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 employs highly qualified instructors who are certified in the content areas they teach. Classes are for students in grades 7-12 and are online. It is expected that each course will involve 70 hours of coursework. The course will be available beginning 8:00 a.m. on June 23, 2014 and will close at 12:00 p.m. on July 24, 2014. Students and parents must provide a valid email address on registration form as most if not all communications will be via email.

Students enrolled in Academic Summer School must be active learners, complete the required assignments according to the timeline established by the instructor, and follow the Acceptable Use Policy and program procedures. Violation of any of the procedures stated can result in automatic dismissal from Academic Summer School.

Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 provides an Academic Summer School program for school districts. However, all curricular decisions are made by the districts. Please direct all questions concerning required courses to the school guidance counselor.

Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 Board Policy Number 124 establishes policies for operation of the Academic Summer School Program.

Program Information & Procedures

  1. PROGRAM STRUCTURE – ALL COURSES WILL BE ONLINE AND AVAILABLE FOR GRADES 7 -12
  1. Tuition $150.00 per course by 3:00 p.m. on June 12, 2014

  1. Date & Time

Instructor will activate course onMonday, June 23, 2014at 8:00 a.m.and deactivate course on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 12:00 p.m.Students will be expected to complete 70 hours of coursework.

  1. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
  • Plagiarism is defined as copying the language, phrasing, structure, or specific ideas of others and presenting any of these as one's own, original work; it includes copying and pasting from a website, buying papers, having someone else write your papers and improper citation and use of sources.
  • When you present the words or ideas of another (either published or unpublished) in your writing, you must fully acknowledge your sources. Plagiarism is considered a violation of academic integrity whenever it occurs in written work.
  • Information about plagiarism will be covered in each course by the instructor.

VIOLATION:Any student who submits work that is plagiarized will receive a written warning via a message within the course. Parents will be notified via email or phone. Further plagiarism will result in immediate removal from the course.

  1. GRADING PROCEDURE
  • Academic Summer School is a “pass/fail” program.
  • Academic Summer School grades are based on a point structure.
  • Instructors will outline a point value for the course based on quizzes, tests, projects, homework, reports, class participation, etc.
  • To pass a course: A student must earn a minimum of 75% of the total points established by the classroom instructor and complete all assignments.
  • To fail a course: A student does not earn 75% of the total points established by the instructor and/or does not complete all assignments.
  • No “incompletes” will be given.
  • Grades will be visible to the students at all times. Parents will have to ask student to show their grade. A final grade report will be mailed to the parent and sent to the district on the last day.
  • Status of student progress: Parents/guardians must use email to communicate concerns with the instructor. Parents/guardians may also contact the Academic Summer School Coordinator at or570-544-9131 extension 1273.
  1. ATTENDANCE

A student MUST remain active in the online course and follow all established instructor deadlines.

VIOLATION: A student who fails to login and follow established deadlines will receive a written warning via message within the course. Parents will be notified via email or phone. Further failure to login will result in immediate removal from the course.

  1. STUDENT CONDUCT

Students taking Academic Summer School online courses are required to read and sign the Schuylkill IU 29 AUP

(Acceptable Use Policy) as well as the following:

  • conform to reasonable standards of socially acceptable behavior and language.
  • respect the rights and property of others.
  • preserve the degree of order necessary to educate all students.
  • obey constituted authority and respond to those who hold that authority.

VIOLATION: A student who fails to follow appropriate conduct will receive a written warning via a message within the course. Further incident will result in immediate removal from the course.

  1. TERRORISTIC THREATS

A terroristic threat shall mean:

  • a threat to commit violence communicated with the intent to terrorize another.
  • to cause evacuation of a building.
  • to cause serious public inconvenience, in reckless disregard of the risk of causing such terror or inconvenience.

VIOLATION: Any student who communicates a terroristic threat or commits a terroristic act directed to any

student, employee, Board member, community member or school building will be immediately removed from

the course.

16. DISCIPLINARY ACTION

  • The Academic Summer School Administration will make final disciplinary decisions.
  • Tuition will NOT be refunded for a student removed from an Academic Summer School course

for disciplinary action.

17. COMMUNICATION WITH STUDENTS/PARENTS & OTHER ISSUES

  • Communication with students/parents will be primarily through email and course messages. Phone calls will

be made only if necessary.

  • Issues not specifically addressed in this handbook will be governed by Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29

Board Policy.
