The Sarah Lahr Educational Fund Scholarship for Journalism

Awarded through the Academic Booster Club

This is a $750 one year grant.

The Sarah Lahr Educational Fund supports many educational opportunities for students in Fairfax County, continuing and building upon the work done by Mrs. Lahr during her lifetime. This scholarship recognizes a student who has demonstrated excellence in Journalism during their high school career, and intends to pursue a degree in this field or a related field in college. Two scholarship swill be awarded.

Guidelines for Scholarship Application

1. The applicant must have completed at least two full years at Robinson.

2. The applicant must have been accepted at an accredited two- or four-year college or university, and be planning to pursue a degree in journalism or a related field.

3. The applicant must have demonstrated a commitment to journalistic achievement, through coursework, extracurricular activities and/or outside activities.

4. The applicant must demonstrate involvement in school activities and/or community volunteer activities. At a minimum, the applicant must have actively participated in at least one school-sponsored extra-curricular activity during each of two years at Robinson High School.

To Apply:

Applicants must submit the following in an envelope to the Career Center by April 19, 2017:

  • The attached application OR a resume or similar document including name; address; years at Robinson; names of college(s) to which you have been accepted; and a list of your school-sponsored and outside activities including years of participationand leadership positions held.
  • Your transcript and 7th semester grade report, signed by your counselor.
  • A letter of recommendation from a teacher or advisor with knowledge of the student’s written work at Robinson or in their community.
  • An essay (500-word limit) describing their journalistic endeavors, any positive impact it has had in their community, and future plans in this or a related field.
  • One sample of your work from any publication or school assignment.

NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated on a combination of (1) applicant's grades and coursework; (2) application essay; (3) teacher or advisor recommendation; (4) work sample; (5) participation and leadership extra-curricular activities.
