Please note: All quilts, accessories and non-wearable textile arts are now moved to the Food and Arts Celebration (FAC). Please see the FAC packet and entry forms for more information. This cover page is an overview only; please read entire packet for all important information.
The Fashion Revue (FR) is a county wide 4-H event showcasing clothing made by 4-H members. Fashion Revue is held in conjunction with the Food and Arts Celebration.
Entries are judged for construction prior to the event. On the day of the Fashion Revue, members join other FR and FAC participants in interesting rotation activities. As part of the rotation, FR contestants pick up their garments and model in a small group setting with judges. Members then showcase their work in the Fashion Show in front of an audience.
New this Year: Fashion Revue Members can enter more than one Category!
State qualifying categories are: Traditional, Upcycled, Western Wear Challenge, and Muslin Challenge. Poster/Collage are County categories only. Accessories may be entered in FAC.
Age Divisions are by Member’s age as of 12/31/2015: please note FR age divisions have changed and are not exactly the same as FAC age divisions.

All entries will be judged using the Danish System where every entry receives a score based upon individual merit, according to judging criteria. The standard of excellence must be met as stated on
the judging sheets (see judging score sheets on-line at http://ucanr.edu/sites/slo4-h/Club_Forms/). Judging areas are closed to the public during the judging period. A Division Winner (by age group) from each State Qualifying Category will be selected and is eligible to compete in State Fashion Revue.
Consider participating in the Clothing and Textiles Community Service Project! This year we are making Sturdy reusable totes or grocery bags to donate to local food banks, homeless shelters, thrift shops and libraries. More information is available at: http://4h.ucanr.edu/4-H_Events/SFD/SFR/
We encourage parents and friends to attend the Fashion Revue Show at 1:30 pm. But, if you would like to stay at the event until the Fashion Revue Show, we ask that you volunteer for the event. Volunteers can assist with Rotations, Judging, Tabulation, etc. Volunteer form attached J

Fashion Revue Goals and Objectives:
GOALS:
· Provide educational activities for youth who are learning and growing in citizenship, leadership, and life skills.
· Inspire appreciation of clothing, textiles, consumer science, and personal development.
· Introduce opportunities to extend youth leadership and communication.
· Promote self-esteem through individual expression.
OBJECTIVES: As a result of participation in the Fashion Revue, youth will:
· Build self-confidence by assembling an outfit that enhances body type, expresses personality, and is appropriate for the age of the participant.
· Exhibit skills in presentation of the outfit including posture, grooming, ability to interact with judges, and written commentary.
· Display skill in selection of outfit and accessories.
· Acquire knowledge and skills in planning, presenting, and participating in fashion revues.
· Increase awareness of the effects of clothing construction details.
· Develop the abilities needed to complete applications clearly and submit them in a timely manner.

If you are entering the Up Cycled category, you must include a photo of the garment before altering with your entry form.

A typed commentary of 70 words or less must be submitted along with the entry form, AND a 3”x3” swatch of your fabric attached. Please see more information under “Commentary”.
_____ Wednesday, April 27, 2016 Garments Due
Entries must be turned in to the UCCE Auditorium below the 4-H Office: 2156 Sierra Way, SLO, CA 93401 between the hours of 3:00 and 5:00pm. Entries WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED after 5:00 on APRIL 27. Garments must be pressed and on a hanger. With a safety pin, attach a 3x5” card with your name and club name, and any important notes you would like to tell the judges. Include the pattern envelope and instruction sheet but without your name. Entries will be transported from the 4H Office to Laguna Middle School for you.

Check in at the Registration Table at Laguna Middle School, 11050 Los Osos Valley Road, SLO
between 8:00 am and 8:45 am. You will be given a group and rotation with more information about when and where to pick up your garment for judging. If entering a poster or collage, bring it with you! Be sure to bring any accessories or other items to complete your outfit with you!

Fashion Revue Categories and Divisions:
Age Divisions for each Category:

Junior, age 9-10 as of 12/31/2015
Intermediate, age 11-13 as of 12/31/2015
Senior, age 14-18 as of 12/31/2015
Members may enter one (1) article or outfit in each category: Traditional, Up cycled, Western Wear Challenge, Muslin Challenge, and Poster/Collage. (Poster/Collage are not eligible for State.) Member may only qualify for one category to compete at the State level if chosen as Division Winner. For example, members can enter both in the Traditional and Western Challenge, but if they win their division in each category, they must choose which category to compete in at State.
State Categories:
Traditional: Features garments participants have constructed themselves, showcasing sewing skills and the ability to coordinate an outfit. Entries must be sewn by the members as part of their 4-H Clothing and Textiles project. The outfit must contain at least one constructed garment; participants are encouraged to construct additional garments to complete the outfit.
Up Cycled: Take one or more existing garments and turn them into a new, different, and wearable garment. Include a handmade accessory made by the participant. The up cycled garment must be sewn by the members as part of their 4-H Clothing & Textiles project. Additional fabrics, trims, and supplies may be used during the construction process. A “before” photograph showing the original garment(s) is required. This is not an alteration such as a large dress altered to fit a smaller person. It is a complete change where the garment has been cut apart and remade into a new garment that looks different.
Western Wear Challenge: Construct a western-style shirt/blouse with short or long sleeves. Use any pattern and any fabric. Include handmade or purchased garments to complete the outfit. The entry must be sewn by the members as part of their 4-H Clothing & Textiles project.
Muslin Challenge: Create a wearable garment using at least 2 yards but not more than 3 yards of bleached or unbleached cotton muslin, 36-45” wide. Use of other fabric is allowed but not to exceed 1 yard. Members are encouraged to decorate and embellish the muslin garment using dye, paint, embroidery, “bling”, appliqué, trims, findings, etc. to enhance the garment. Include handmade or purchased garments to complete the outfit. The muslin garment must be created by the member as part of the member's4-H project work but the Clothing & Textiles (Sewing) project is not required. Some ideas are: the member learns to dye fabric in the 4-H Crafts project, then makes a skirt or shorts out of dyed muslin; or the member is in an embroidery project and sews a top, then embroiders it as part of the project; or the member is in a quilting project and does a pieced border on a muslin vest as part of the quilt project. This category is not restricted to sewing project members, but the entry does need to reflect work undertaken in a 4-H project.
County Categories:
Poster/Collage: (not eligible for State Fashion Revue)
Members may enter a poster/collage relating to Fashion or Textile Arts. An entry in this category will provide members with an opportunity to earn a second gold seal and receive a medal for Fashion Revue. Judging criteria for this entry will follow the criteria for the posters in the FAC.
· Open to all members currently enrolled and in good standing in a county 4-H club.
· The member may enter only one (1) item in either poster or collage.
· Give the poster or collage a title.
· Give information about the subject. Keep it simple. It must be legible form three feet away.
· Poster size should be a minimum of 20” x 30” and a maximum of 22” x 30”, in a portrait/vertical layout (not landscape/horizontal) and ready for display.
· Regular or foam poster board may be used.
· For a collage, illustrate a theme in pictures.
· Print your name and club on the back top right corner of the poster or collage.
· Bring this item with you on April 30, it is not pre-judged.
Fashion Revue Awards and Judging:
Entries are evaluated individually on construction using Rubric based judging sheets (available at: slocounty4h.org). Construction judging criteria includes:
· Suitability of construction methods.
· Appropriateness of fabric and pattern to skill level.
· Appearance, Workmanship, Finishing and Neatness.
As part of the day’s rotations, FR participants will pick up their garments and model in a small group setting in front of 2-3 very nice, adult judges. Judging is closed to the public. Outfits are evaluated for fit, appearance, and presentation. Member may be asked questions, such as:
· How long have you been sewing?
· Why did you choose this pattern? Fabric?
· What changes did you make in the pattern?
· What was the hardest part of making your outfit?
· What new thing did you learn by making this outfit?
· Where will you wear your outfit?
· What makes this outfit a good choice for this activity/event?
· What new sewing equipment did you learn to use while making this outfit?
· Primary members will receive participation certificates ONLY.
· All Junior, Intermediate, and Senior participants will receive certificates. To receive a gold award, participants must earn a gold seal in two (2) of the following: construction, modeling, accessory, and poster/collage.
· Participants are only eligible for division winner if he/she receives a gold seal in BOTH construction and modeling. The Fashion Show is an integral part of the Fashion Revue and members are strongly encouraged to participate, and is required for division winner.
· One member in each of the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Divisions will be selected as a division winner for outstanding construction and modeling. If there is only one entry in a category, this does not automatically warrant an award.
· Only the Division Winner can compete at the State Fashion Revue
· One overall winner will be selected from the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Divisions.
· If one division member enters more than one category, and wins both, they must select one category to compete in at State.
· All individual entries are judged on the Danish System, where every entry receives recognition based upon individual merit. The standard of excellence must be met as stated on the judging sheets (see judging score sheets on-line at slocounty4h.org).
· Awards are based on merit, as determined by the judges.
· The commentary is not read during the judging. It is read during the Fashion Show.
Fashion Revue Guidelines:
· All entries must meet State Fashion Revue Modesty Guidelines. Formal wear may be strapless but backless dresses, visible undergarments, lingerie, or swimsuits are not permitted. Primary Members: 5-8 years old as of December 31, 2015
Members may enter an item they have constructed, which can be worn or exhibited. The Primary Member category is non-competitive. All participants will receive a participation certificate.
Examples:
· Elastic waist shorts, pants, or skirts.
· Apron
· Up cycled purse or skirt.
Skills may include:
· Inserting elastic or drawstring
· Machine topstitching
· Simple seam finish
· Use of correct grain lines
· Must be well pressed
Junior: 9 – 10 years of age as of December 31, 2015
Members create an item and sew everything themselves. Junior members may be first year sewers or continued from Primary. Junior members show coordination of outfit and fabric.
