Thanks to your support, I recently attended the American Payroll Association's Capital Summit. At this two-day conference, I learned a great deal that will benefit our operations, and I'd like to share a few highlights.
From government officials, I learned the latest legislative and regulatory compliance updates, which will protect our payroll operations from penalties for noncompliance with IRS and DOL rules.
I networked with several savvy payroll professionals who have tackled some of the same challenges we face. These informal discussions provided some valuable success stories and lessons learned that could help us save time and money. I will study them to see how they may apply to our operations.

[Example] Next year we’ll have the opportunity to respond to the Economic Census, the U.S. Government's official five-year measure of American business and the economy. Chuck Brady and Kari Klinedinst of the U.S. Census Bureau explained the important role we play by reporting employment data for this survey.
[Example] U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services issued a new Form I-9 that we need to use to verify the work eligibility of our new hires. Dave Basham, of USCIS’ Outreach Program, led us through the changes in the form that we need to understand.
[Example] Sherri Grigsby, from the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement, told us of the latest technological and legal developments in child support withholding. OCSE is making it easier and easier for employers to engage online.
[Example] We pay employees in many states, and tracking state laws can be a challenge. Since 2011, APA has been working with Uniform Law Commission on a model state law for wage garnishments, called the Uniform Wage Garnishment Act. Bill Henning, the ULC commissioner who led the efforts to draft the act, explained why the act is necessary and the efforts underway now to see it enacted.
