Subcommittee Meeting Minutes
  1. Introduction and attendance

We had 18 attendees (see next page for list of names and contacts).

  1. Discussion and exchange

-Round-robin: share your recent and upcoming activities

As this was a first meeting for the subcommittee under Song Gao, our goal was to brainstorm and establish some general directions to proceed. We had a very healthy exchange of ideas over a number of topics, which generally revolved around 3 areas:

  • Multimodal route choice in the context of emerging ICTs and business models – what are the challenges of traveler choice behavior when presented with more options like shared use mobility systems, transportation network services (TNSs) like Uber and Lyft; how do we model these choices (which inevitably intertwine with the operational policies of transit services which fall under ADB30(1)), and what changes in application paradigms may exist due to these emerging technologies?
  • Autonomous vehicles – similarly, what are the challenges that we may see in research on route choice behavior of travelers when (if?) autonomous vehicles begin to penetrate the market in the future?
  • Route choice applicability to large scale networks – what are the challenges we face in modeling route choice in larger, more realistic networks?

These exchanges led to a number of proposed action items listed below.

  1. Future Activities

-Ideas for calls for papers

We are interested in conducting one general call for papers in the area of route choice, with particular interest in topics related to multimodal route choice, emerging technologies (shared use mobility, multimodal systems, autonomous and connected vehicles), and large scale systems. We will try to involve ADB30(1) Transit and Freight Logistics subcommittee in this as well.

-New initiatives or suggestions for the subcommittee

With the last route choice workshop held in 2013, we plan to hold a new workshop for 2016 with an update on research in route choice. We would like to structure the workshop around current updates and future visions, which should accommodate the topics we discussed at this meeting including multimodal and autonomous vehicle technologies (but specifics will also depend on speaker availability). We would also like to invite ADB30(1) Transit & Freight Logistics subcommittee to be involved as well.

  1. Other business

There was no other business.
