Riverway Drive Duplication – Gollogly Lane to Allambie Lane

Planning Study

Frequently Asked Questions

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is undertaking a planning study for the long term upgrade of Riverway Drivebetween Gollogly and Allambie Lanes.

Riverway Drive is a state controlled road which serves as an urban arterial between Gollogly Lane and Allambie Lane. In recent years, extensive residential development, especially in the Upper Ross, has increased pressure on this section of road. At the moment, Riverway Drive is four laned between Ross River Road and Gollogly Lane. This project will involve extending the four lanes to Allambie Lane to increase vehicle capacity along this 2.9km section of road.

The aim of this project is to increase capacity on Riverway Drive, reduce delays and traffic related incidents, and to provide motorists with a road that is better able to support traffic growth.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered

What stage is the project at now?

The project is currently in the concept planning phase. During this phase the project team will gather community feedback, with the aim of developing a funding application. At this time, funding has not been approved and no construction start date will be available until this occurs.

Why is consultation occurring at this time?

We are seeking feedback to ensure the final design addresses the needs and concerns of the community.

How was the draft design for the project determined?

The draft design was based on Department of Transport and Main Roads’ requirements, including Australian standards for road safety design, improved safety, reduced congestion, increased reliability and travel times, and improved and more consistent traffic flow. Community engagement is the next important step in working towards the final design.

When can I expect to hear about the final design and funding?

Once funding has been approved and a finalised design has been selected, further community engagement will commence. The community will be informed at all stages of this project.

What are the benefits of the proposed upgrade?

The Gollogly LanetoAllambie Lane upgrade project will improve safety, relieve congestion and enhance reliability. Other key benefits to road users and the community include:

  • Designated bus pullover areas
  • Signalised intersections to aide turning movement and provide better traffic gaps
  • Separated carriageways for improved safety
  • Less angulated road in most areas for better property access, with curbing and drainage.
  • Deceleration lanes for rowing club and access to LoamIsland parkland
  • Installation of new pedestrian footpath on the river side
  • Additional street lighting
  • Safer access to the shopping centre from the outbound lane

Will thepedestrian pathsremain?

Yes, pedestrian access and bike lanes will be provided as part of this project. The road duplication will fit within the current road corridor, but it will be necessary to replace the existing pathway with a new pedestrian pathway.

I travel by public transport. Whatprovisions will be available?

Existing bus drop-off points will remain in the areas they are currently located. Any changes to bus stops will depend on design standard requirements and consideration of community engagement feedback.

What intersections will change as a result of this project?

A focus for the planning study is the requirement of a centralised median to comply with departmental standards. As a result of this, all intersections and street accesses will require changes to improve safety for motorists. Planned improvements to intersections and street access will include:

  • Dollview and Illuta Streets will accessed by an in-bound service road.
  • Santal Drive will be upgraded to a signalised intersection. U-turn movements will be permitted for access to the service road and continued out-bound and in-bound travel.
  • Sonia Street will have a designated right turning lane.
  • Riverway Drive and Gollogly Lane will remain as a signalised intersection
  • Riverway Drive and Allambie Lane will remain as a signalised intersection with minor improvements.

Will you improve drainage?

The planning study includes investigation in to the enhancement of the current road gradient and improvements to kerbing and channelling along Riverway Drive. The development of a detailed design plan to address these issues will contribute towards improving drainage along Riverway Drive.

Will further community engagement occur?

Community engagement is an important aspect for all departmental projects.

Information will be provided to the community through a number of initiatives including:

  • Community displays
  • Advertisements in the local newspaper
  • Project notification flyers and letters
  • Monthly Construction newsletter updates
  • Main Roads website
