This is an exciting opportunity to join the SKA Organisation, a newly incorporated not-for-profit company which will lead the overall system design for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project and will oversee the supporting developments and designs within globally distributed SKA work packages (WPs). Work packages for the major SKA subsystems (Elements) will be contracted on a small number of work package consortia who will be responsible for the management, execution and delivery of the work packages.

The SKA Organisation has annual income of around £5 M and will employ approximately 30 staff by the end of 2012.

The SKA Organisation is currently based in the Alan Turing Building, The University of Manchester, but is expected to move to a purpose-built building at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire (UK) in October 2012.

Role

Reporting to the SKA Project Manager you will be responsible for the overall management, control and successful delivery of the SKA Dish Element. You will also form the primary managerial link between the SKA Element(s) and the project level efforts.

In addition you will be expected to actively participate and support the SKA Project Manager in all aspects of the overall project management and control.

We are looking for an experienced project manager with a proven track record in the management and delivery of medium to large projects with a high degree of technical complexity to manage the SKA Dish Element.

You must also have:

  • University degree in Physics or Engineering, another closely related and relevant field, or equivalent expertise.
  • A proven record and demonstrated ability to manage and deliver outcomes in medium to large complex projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international project management standards and the application thereof.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the management of system engineering based projects.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in one or more of the critical technology areas of large Dishes.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to influence people in widely differing parts of a complex organisation.
  • Strong ability to lead, supervise, and evaluate staff from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Willingness to present the SKA Office in international and other forums, ability to work closely with regional SKA management staff from a variety of cultures, and willingness to travel to SKA consortium locations and centres.
  • Membership of, or eligibility for membership of, recognised national and international project management institutes.
