RIVER REGION UNITED WAY PRESENTS THE 2012 JEAN & ADOLPH “BUCKS” WEIL AWARD
TO BARRIE AND LAURA HARMONFOR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE
Montgomery, AL (April 25, 2013) River Region United Way presented the 2012 Jean & Adolph “Bucks” Weil Award to Barrie and Laura Harmon at its annual meeting on April 17th. Like the legacy of service left by Jean and Bucks Weil, this award recognizes individuals and organizations who continue to provide outstanding community service to the River Region United Way.
About the Award
To recognize volunteers and exemplary community service, the River Region United Way established the “Special United Way Award” in 1977. The award was renamed in 1995to highlight the commitment to community exemplified by Adolph “Bucks” Weil, Jr. In 1970, he served as president of the Board of Directors of the Montgomery Area United Appeal (now known as the River Region United Way). Bucks remained very active in the community until his passing in 1995.
In 2012, the Bucks Weil Award was renamed the Jean & Adolph “Bucks” Weil Award to represent both Bucks and his wife, Jean. Jean was a passionate community volunteer until her passing in 2012. She was the longest acting Pink Lady at St. Margaret’s Hospital. In addition to United Way, Jean also supported the Montgomery Zoo, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, The Montgomery Academy, the Montgomery Humane Society and the Temple Beth Or Sisterhood.
2012 Honorees
The Harmons served as 2011-2012 Co-chairs of The Tocqueville Society, a group of individuals and private foundations contributing at least $10,000 annually to the River Region United Way. The Tocqueville Society was established to foster, promote and recognize the vital importance of voluntary community service and personal giving at an exceptional level.
Russ Dunman, president and CEO of the River Region United Way, said, “Under the leadership of Barrie and Laura Harmon, The Tocqueville Society grew from 43 to 91 members. Collectively, The Tocqueville Society membership contributed over $1.2 million to the annual campaign in 2012. That’s 23% of the total funds raised by the campaign last year.”
In addition to their service and commitment to the River Region United Way, the Harmons have volunteered and served in leadership positions with many local nonprofit organizations, including the Jackson Hospital Foundation, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Central Alabama Community Foundation, the Montgomery Area Business Committee for the Arts, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and numerous other organizations that serve our community.
