Revision of zero and first conditional s

There are many types of if clauses. Zero conditional sentences usually refer to general truths, but can also refer to actions in the near future. We use the present tense in both parts of the sentence.

  • If I get tickets for Damian Pollasco, I get dinner with Marty Ross!

First conditional sentences refer to the future. We use the future tense (or a modal) in the main clause.

  • If there are no tickets, I will not present Saturday's show.
  • If there are tickets, then I will take her out to dinner.
  • If he likes the art in her flat, he may take her out to dinner.

A. Match the two parts of the sentences.

Words with variable stress and meaning

In this sentence, the word present is a verb and the stress is on the second syllable.

  • If there are no tickets, I will not present Saturday's show.

In this sentence, the word present is a noun and the stress is on the first syllable.

  • She gave me a really nice birthday present.

In this sentence, the word present is an adjective and the stress is on the first syllable.

  • He wasn't present when the boss talked to the staff.

The stress changes on the following words, depending on whether they are verbs or nouns.
