Research Scientist position

Position Summary

This position will support the Trauma and Injury Prevention Program by developing and implementing research strategies with the goal of injury prevention. This position focuses on social and psychological mechanisms that contribute to child injury. The incumbent is responsible for contributing to a nationally recognized program of injury prevention research, disseminating research results in scientific publications and at professional meetings, assisting with the development of research funding opportunities and serving as a spokesperson for the Trauma and Injury Prevention Program and its research projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Development and implementation of research related to injury control to identify behavioral or social causes for the incidence of injury.

  • Designs and executes injury control research projects
  • Ensures compliance with hospital, IRB, HIPAA and funding agency regulations
  • Assists in development of grant applications and budget documents
  • Creates and maintain study specific databases. Educates and oversees others in data collection
  • Performs literature searches as needed. Develops and maintains a familiarity with literatures related to child injury prevention
  • Contributes to discipline at regional and national level, as appropriate

  • Assists with the planning, development, and implementation of research study budget
  • Promotes utilization of financial and material resources in an efficient manner

Qualifications

Education

  • Ph.D. in Psychology, Public Health, Medical Anthropology or related field

Experience

One to two years work experience in basic or applied ed social science; will also consider significant research experience during graduate degree program

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Strong potential to successfully conduct independent social science research, as evidenced by co-authorship on scientific publications and/or conference presentations
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Knowledge of Children’s, UTSW and federal policies and regulations regarding the protection of human subjects in research, or the ability to quickly learn and observe them
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize a personal computer and software applicable to research (e.g., Word, EXCEL)
  • Advanced knowledge of research methodology, and experience designing both correlational and experimental research
  • Advanced statistical skills, including analysis of data from both experimental and correlational designs. Experience with SPSS
  • Exceptional scientific writing skills
  • Effective organizational skills and attention to detail; effective follow-through, and commitment to excellence
  • Effective professional communication skills: Ability to communicate with others in a clear, understandable, and professional manner
  • Ability to produce timely and competent work with minimal supervision
  • Physical and emotional health adequate for attendance requirements and performance
  • Must be flexible and adaptable. Conditions and environment are unpredictable and change frequently.
