Justification: Why should this be done?

(30 points) / Objective:“Continue to develop and improve the system of defining and assessing student learning outcomes.”
How: Allocating appropriate resources for the coordination of the SLO Task Force and the implementation process of outcomes and assessment expresses COD’s commitment to improving student learning. The responsibilities under the purview of the SLO Coordinator and Assistants include:
  • Gather, record, organize and store data from instruction and student services to evaluate SLO and Assessment progress for all areas of the campus
  • Research best practices and create plan and structure for assessment
  • Create handbook and toolkit for use faculty and staff across campus
  • Provide guidance, education, workshops, tools, rubrics, models and other resources as needed across campus
  • Attend conferences, institutes, workshops, meetings and report back to College of the Desert
  • Provide campus-wide supervision and training for all implementation efforts
  • Assign duties to Lead Faculty Assistants.
Our ability to coordinate our efforts will be reflected in learning improvements at the course, program and general education level, that would otherwise be difficult to understand and characterize, without evidence based research that is faculty driven.

How:With a faculty member (or members) in place to supervise this process, the relationship between program (student) needs and planning/prioritization can be clarified at every level of the institution
Goal: “Foster an organizational culture that puts learning first.”
How: Faculty will drive the campus-wide implementation of the SLO process, which will involve all departments, programs, and units.
SLOs and ASSESSMENT requires support from faculty, staff, administration, and the Board of Trustees in order to implement necessary institutional changes. We also rely upon participation from student services, librarians, administrators, and students. Assessment may also involve community members such as alumni/ae, trustees, employers.

  • Define SLO Coordinator Job Description including duties and scope of responsibilities
  • Determine the role of SLO Coordinator within the College organizational structure
  • Determine the selection process for SLO Coordinator
  • Evaluate software being used at other colleges to facilitate SLO data gathering, storing, assessing and sharing
  • Create structure for Student Learning Outcome Assessment Cycle to foster and encourage collaborative work

Assessment process: How will you determine that your proposal has been successful? / Process will be tracked through Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment at every level of the institution: course, program, GE to be measured every year indefinitely
Resources Required: facilities, equipment, software, staff, etc. (include cost estimate) / Faculty: One Full Release time Faculty
Several Lead Faculty Assistant at 20% Release representing areas from instruction and student services
Software: Investment in Curricunet or Illumen based on research yet to be conducted. Software will serve the purpose of storing, organizing and sharing data on outcomes and assessment / Cost: $72,000 replacement costs for 2.2 FTES (estimate)
