JOB DESCRIPTION

LIFEGUARD

ORGANISATION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reports to:Swimming Pool Coordinator

Liases with:Swimming Teacher(s) & Volunteers

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

  • To ensure the safety of learners using the swimming pool during swimming classes and to contribute to the day to day processes that maintain the highest standards of health and safety within the environmentand promote learning.

PRIMARY TASKS:

  • As the lifeguard on poolsidemaintain vigilant observation of the swimming pool in accordance with the pool operating procedures taking the necessary action to ensure the safety of all pool users.
  • Assisting the swimming teacher in the operationof the college’s pool safe operating procedures and emergency action plan.
  • Ensure that users of the area comply with requirements of the pool safe operating procedures.
  • Supporting the swim teacher(s) in maintaining the general health and safety of the whole environment.
  • Undertaking daily checks of all areas and equipment in areas of responsibility to ensure cleanliness and safety and reporting concerns immediately.
  • To undertake the regular water quality checks.
  • Assisting the swimming teacher in the organisation and distribution of equipment for swimming classes.
  • To organise and coordinate the evacuation of the swimming pool in thecase of anemergency.
  • To assist the swimming teacher in the administration of floatation devices andutilisingpool entry equipment when required.
  • To maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygieneand health & safety within the working environment including all pool areas, changing areas and swimming facilities.
  • To keep accurate records of checks undertaken as required.
  • Supporting the operation of the aquatic therapy pool if required.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to equality to ensure we develop a community which celebrates and values diversity.

  • To act within the health and safety policy and procedures as to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Any other tasks the swimming teacher and/or swimming pool coordinator may delegate to further the operation and efficiency of the college swimming pool.

PERSON SPECIFICATION – LIFEGUARD

ATTRIBUTES / ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
Experience / Previous experience of lifeguarding
A clear understanding of health and safety requirements of a swimming pool and its changing facilities
Clear competence in and knowledge of rescue and resuscitation techniques and procedures in line with NPLQ / Working in swimming classes
Working with young people and adults with physical disabilities and or learning difficulties
Working with children
Qualifications / Current NPLQ life guard qualification / Current First Aid Qualification
Abilities / Good communication skills with a range of learners from children to adults and parents and other stakeholders
Good organisation skills
Good observation skills and attention to detail
Ability to work under pressure
Flexibility
Other / Enjoy good general health
Support the ethos of the organisation and be fit to work with vulnerable adults and children
