JOB SUMMARYProvide spiritual support to Pleasantview residents and their families; requires consistent exercise of discretion and judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, TASKS, and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. VISIT RESIDENTS - Meet one-on-one with Independent Living, Assisted Living, nursing care, and skilled nursing residents to hear their concerns, provide emotional support, and pray with them.
  2. VISIT FAMILIES - Meet with families of nursing care residents to listen, provide support, and pray with them.
  3. UPDATES – Keep other staff informed about observed changes in resident behavior, concerns with resident living space, or other issues the resident may present.
  4. PLAN ACTIVITIES - Organize and facilitate prayer groups, Bible study groups, and book study groups for residents in Independent Living, assisted living, and nursing care.
  5. GIFTS – Discern resident gifts (music, speaking, etc.) and appropriately use those gifts in services.
  6. SUPPORT AT TRANSITION - Support for residents and their families at time of admission and time discharge (moving away, moving to higher level of care, or death)
  7. VOLUNTEERS - Organize volunteers and church groups to conduct worship services, manage sound equipment, and give devotions. These include but are not limited to Sunday morning service, Sunday afternoon service, Wednesday evening service, weekly devotionals, and Saturday services.
  8. VOLUNTEER TEAM – Recruit, train and organize team of volunteers to assist with resident visitation, leading activities (Bible Study, book study, prayer group, etc.), and for back up coverage for chaplain.
  9. STAFF COMMUNICATION - Keep staff informed of chaplaincy events (worship services, Bible studies, devotions, etc.), making sure all such events are included in activity calendars.
  10. MEMORIAL SERVICES - Schedule and organize monthly and annual services to remember Pleasantview residents who passed away. Includes working with administrative support to inform families of those residents.
  11. CLERGY - Develop and maintain strong working relationship with area clergy of all denominations. Includes plans for Pleasantview to host clergy meetings.
  12. CONGREGATIONAL TIES - Facilitate relationship and communication between residents and spiritual leadership of their congregation (without violating HIPAA)
  13. FUNERALS – Assist with funerals as able and requested by families.
  14. VISITATIONS – Attend visitations and/or funerals of Pleasantview residents as feasible.
  15. CONTINUING EDUCATION – Attend continuing education events related to chaplaincy and/or required Federal, State and organizational training.
  16. PREACHING - Preach or lead worship at Pleasantview worship services as scheduled.

Must be able to:

  1. Read, write, and verbally communicateeffectively in English.
  2. Effectively and efficiently use computer programs (Microsoft Office) and office machines (computer, fax, copier, phone, calculator, etc.).
  3. Work independently, collaborate with the team/department and interact with other departments in a professional manner.
  4. Discuss faith and theological issues in a non-coercive manner, respecting personal beliefs and faith background of individual residents, families and staff.
  5. Listen and convey heartfelt compassion and understanding to variety of people.
  6. Speak effectively to individuals, small groups, and large groups.
  7. Be creative and flexible in planning worship that communicates to and meets needs of those service is planned for (dementia, independent living, etc.)
  8. Work with and respect leadership from all faith traditions.
  9. Interact effectively and appropriately with elderly residents, including those with dementia as well as those with full cognitive abilities.
  10. Adjust schedule according to work needs, and come in on short notice or at non-regular hours.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Prefer ordained clergy, seminary training, chaplaincy training, or training/background in aging services.

Must have valid Iowa Driver’s license.

STATUS: Exempt.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This job operates in a professional office environment, but requires walking outdoors and in various community locations.Most of the day involves sitting, standing, walking, and movement. Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 20 pounds. This is a 30 hr. /wk. positon. Hours are a regular schedule of four week days as arranged with supervisor; however this position will require occasional weekend and evening work.
