The Cuban Philatelic Society of America held its annual meeting this year at the WESTPEX 2005 Philatelic Exhibition in San Francisco, California. The show was a great success for the Society with a total of nine different Cuban exhibits and two additional non-Cuban exhibits on display by members of the Society. Among the Cuban exhibits there were four gold medal winners, two silver medals, one silver-bronze medal, one bronze medal, and one two-frame exhibit in the non-competitive category. Additionally, the two other Society members that exhibited non-Cuban collections both won gold medals. That is a total of six gold medals out of a total of ten CPSA collections in competition. Janet Klug, President of the American Philatelic Society, was present and participated in giving out the awards.
The show was attended by a good geographical distribution of Society members. Yamil Kouri, our Society president and journal editor, came from Boston; Fernando Iglesias and his wife, María Ciria, came from New Jersey; Ernesto Cuesta and his wife Laura came from Maryland; Jorge Marí came from Miami, Chachi Prats and his wife Nena, together with their daughter Aleida and son-in-law Tony, came from Puerto Rico and New York City, respectively; Alvaro García, his wife María Elena, and daughter Melania, came from New Orleans; Arturo Martín de Nicolás came from Austin, Texas; Gerald Vaiser and his father Alberto, from Dallas, Texas; Ron Hill and his wife Judith came from Denver, Colorado; Alfred Kugel came from Chicago; Gary Weiss came from Texas; Ray Coughlin and his wife Lynda came from Arizona; Michel Hechema came from Canada; Mark Piper came from San Francisco; Jesús Chao came from San José; Jack Thompson and his wife Linda came from Alamo; and Mark Tyx and his wife Claire came from Mountain View, all last three cities in the San Francisco Bay area—a total of 29 people, including family members. The first day of the show, Society members met for dinner at the “El Torito” restaurant a couple of blocks south of the hotel where the show was held. Attending were Prats, Hill, Iglesias, Cuesta, Martín de Nicolás, Vaiser, Tyx, Piper, and Hechema with their corresponding spouses and/or families. On Saturday morning, a business meeting was held to discuss the future direction of the Society. This meeting resulted in many ideas for improving the production of the Society journals and auction bulletins, the Society auctions themselves, and the Society finances. Details of these initiatives will be forthcoming. The business meeting was followed by an excellent presentation on Cuban aerophilately by Mark Tyx. The presentation was titled “The Richness of Cuban Aerophilately” and covered from the early aeronautical activity in Cuba in the years 1913-1914 through all the phases of the development of Cuban national aviation and the role of Cuba in the development of international commercial aviation in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and ended with jet flights in the 1950s. Mark’s deep knowledge of Cuban aerophilately and his intense passion for the subject was contagious and everyone enjoyed his presentation tremendously.
The exhibition was culminated by an awards banquet on Saturday night that was one of the best ever experienced at a philatelic show. It started with a nice salad with a delicious raspberry dressing, followed by a main course of salmon and steak with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables that was very finely done, and was capped by a tasteful fruit tart. All of the Cuban exhibits got a WESTPEX 2005 show medal and a certificate of participation and also another medal and certificate of participation from the CPSA.
Overall, the organizers of WESTPEX did an outstanding job of organizing and managing the show and the awards banquet. The dealer bourse consisted of over 76 dealers from all over the world and some of the CPSA members found a few little jewels to enhance their collections. The nine Cuban collections in the exhibition were of very high caliber and covered a wide spectrum of Cuban philately from its stampless period through the Spanish and U.S. administrations, the Republic, and the Castro era. Two of our San Francisco Bay Area members, Jack Thompson and Mark Piper, exhibited their collections for the first time and impressed us with their silver medal presentations. Another member, Gerald Vaiser of Dallas, continued expanding his very interesting and unusual exhibit of Cuban Republic Official Mail envelopes which he started showing at TEXPEX 2003 and is now much augmented and improved. Denver member, Ron Hill, also had an unusual presentation dealing with U.S. themes and subjects in Cuban stamps of both the Republic and the Castro era.
All in all we can say that WESTPEX 2005 was one of the most successful shows in which the CPSA has ever participated, with one of the highest attendances of Society members and their families, and with a magnificent representation of Cuban philately in exhibition, both in scope and quality of the material shown.

La Sociedad Filatélica Cubana de América celebró su reunión anual este año durante la Exposición Filatélica WESTPEX 2005 en San Francisco, California. La exposición fue un gran éxito para la Sociedad con un total de nueve colecciones de Cuba diferentes y dos no de Cuba siendo exhibidas por miembros de la Sociedad. Las colecciones de Cuba presentadas recibieron cuatro medallas de oro, dos de plata, una de bronce plateado y una de bronce; una exhibición de un marco se exhibió fuera de competencia. Además, los dos miembros que exhibieron colecciones no cubanas ambos recibieron medallas de oro. En resumen, de diez coleccionesde miembros de la Sociedad que se presentaron en competencia,seisrecibieron medallas de oro. La presidenta de la Sociedad Americana de Filatelia, Janet Klug, asistió a la exposición y ayudó a repartir las medallas.
La exposición contó con una buena distribución geográfica de miembros de la Sociedad. Yamil Kouri, actualmente nuestro presidente y editor de nuestra revista, vino de Boston; Fernando Iglesias y su esposa, María Ciria, vinieron de New Jersey, Ernesto Cuesta y su esposa Laura vinieron de Maryland; Jorge Marí vino de Miami; Ignacio Prats y su esposa Nena junto con su hija Aleida y yerno Tony, vinieron de Puerto Rico y New York respectivamente; Alvaro García, su esposa María Elena e hija Melania vinieron de New Orleans; Arturo Martín de Nicolás vino de Austin, Texas; Gerald Vaiser y su padre Alberto vinieron de Dallas, Texas; Gary Weiss también vino de Texas; Ron Hill y su esposa Judith vinieron de Denver, Colorado; Alfred Kugel vino de Chicago;Ray Coughlin y su esposa Lynda vinieron de Arizona; Michel Hechema vino de Canadá; Mark Piper vino de San Francisco; Jesús Chao vino de San José; Jack Thompson y su esposa Linda vinieron de Alamo; y Mark Tyx y su esposa Claire vinieron de Mountain View, las tres últimas ciudades son todas del área de la Bahía de San Francisco. El primer día de la exposición los miembros de la Sociedad se reunieron a cenar en el restaurante "El Torito" a un par de cuadras del hotel donde se celebró la exposición. Asistieron Prats, Hill, Iglesias, Cuesta, Martín de Nicolás, Vaiser, Tyx, Piper, y Hechema con sus respectivas esposas y miembros de familia. El sábado por la mañana tuvimos una reunión administrativa de la Sociedad para discutir planes futuros para la Sociedad. Esta reunión elucidó muchas ideas para mejorar la producción de las revistas y los boletines de subastas, las subastas mismas, y las finanzas de la Sociedad. Los detalles de estas iniciativas se elaborarán y publicarán próximamente. La reunión administrativa fue seguida de una excelente charla sobre aerofilatelia cubana presentada por Mark Tyx. La presentación se tituló "La riqueza de la aerofilatelia cubana" y cubrió desde las primeras actividades de la aeronáutica en Cuba allá por los años de 1913 a 1914, continuando a través de todo el desarrollo de la aviación en Cuba y el papel preponderante de la isla en el desarrollo de la aviación comercial internacional a fines de la década de 1920 y principios de la década de 1930, hasta los vuelos de propulsión a chorro en la década de 1950. Los conocimientos profundos de aerofilatelia cubana de Mark y su pasión por el tema fueron contagiosos y todos disfrutamos enormemente de su amena charla.
La exposición culminó con un banquete de premios el Sábado por la noche que fue uno de los mejores que hemos disfrutados en una exposición filatélica. Empezó con una riquísima ensalada con aderezo de frambuesas, seguida de un plato principal de salmón y solomillo acompañados de vegetales y puré de papas, todo muy bien preparado y presentado y finalmente una exquisita tartaleta de frutas de postre. Todas las exhibiciones cubanas presentadas no solo recibieron una medalla y certificado de participación de WESTPEX 2005, sino que también recibieron otra medalla y certificado por parte de la Sociedad.
En resumen, los organizadores de WESTPEX hicieron una labor excepcional en organizar y administrar la exposición y banquete de premios. La bolsa de comerciantes para la exposición contó con 76 comerciantes de todo el mundo y varios de los miembros de la Sociedad encontraron unas cuantas joyitas de nuestra filatelias para aumentar sus colecciones. Las nueve colecciones cubanas que se presentaron son colecciones de gran calibre y cubrieron un gran panorama de la filatelia cubana, desde la prefilatelia a través del período colonial español, la administración americana, la República y hasta la era de Castro. Dos de nuestros miembros del área de la Bahía de San Francisco, Jack Thompson y Mark Piper, exhibieron sus colecciones por primera vez y nos impresionaron con sus colecciones meritorias de sendas medallas de plata. Otro miembro, Gerald Vaiser de Dallas, continuó expandiendo su interesante y poco común exhibición de Sobres de Correspondencia Oficial de la República de Cuba, la cual empezó a exhibir en TEXPEX 2003 y la que ha aumentado y mejorado considerablemente. Ron Hill de Denver también nos mostró una colección muy interesante ilustrando temas y personajes estadounidenses en los sellos de la República y la época de Castro.
Básicamente, podemos afirmar que WESTPEX 2005 fue una de las exposiciones filatélicas más exitosas en que la Sociedad ha participado, contando con una gran asistencia por parte de miembros de la Sociedad y sus familiares y con una magnífica representación de la filatelia cubana, tanto en la variedad como en la calidad del material presentado.
