Rent a house. Prepositions of place

1. Draw the outline of your favorite room at home. Draw only the windows and doors. Work in pair with your teacher. Describe the furniture in your room. Let your teacher draw the room. Take turns.

2. Answer the questions:

- Do you rent an apartment\a house?

- Do you know anybody who rents an apartment?

- What does he\she like about the apartment?

- What doesn't he\she like about the apartment?

- Do you know anybody who works as an estate agent\realtor? Do you think it's a good job?

- What is the best way to find an apartment in your city? Internet? Newspapers? Realtors?

- What is the most important when choosing apartment for rent? Location? Price?

- Do you know the average price for one-bedroom apartment in your city?

- Which is the best zone to rent an apartment in you city? Which is the worst? Which is most expensive? The cheapest?

3. Study the vocabulary below (you can also ask students with good imagination to make their own sentences with new words for better understanding and memorizing):

#1 – “I checked theclassifieds, but there is nothing in myprice range.”

Theclassifiedsis the section of a newspaper

Yourprice rangeis the amount of money you hope to pay

#2 – “The apartment is fullyfurnished.”

Furnished means it has furniture – beds, tables, chairs

#3 – “I can’t affordto live there alone, so I’m looking for aroommate.“

I can’t afford means “I don’t have money.”

Aroommateis a person who lives with you in the apartment and pays the part for it.

#4 – “Tomove in, you need to pay asecurity deposit.”

Move inmeans to enter an apartment to live there.

Asecurity deposit –an amount of money that you get back at the end of your time living there if the apartment is in good condition.

#5 – “Thelandlordoffers a two-yearlease.”

Thelandlordis the person who owns the apartment

Aleaseis a contract for you to live in and use the apartment

#6 – “The building isrun-down, but the apartment wasrenovated.”

Run-downmeans the building is old

renovatedmeans everything was redesigned and made new

M: Are the utilities included?

W: The water is, but now the gas and electricity

M: That's a little more than I wanted to pay. Thanks anyway

Dialogue 2:

W: Hello, Breezeway Manor Apartments, how may I help you?

M: Do you have a furnished, two-bedroom apartment in the $400 range?

W: Why yes, you're in luck, one just came open today. It goes for $450 per month, including water.

M: Is it on the first or second floor?

W: The first floor, it's very close to our swimming pool. Shall I hold it for you? I need one month's rent as a deposit.

M: Yes, please, do. I'll be right over.
