Regional Events Strategy Conference Call 16 July 2012

Attendance:

Amanda Riches / Tablelands Regional Council
Stephanie Wilson / Cairns Regional Council
Vicki Kirk / Cook Shire Council
Fiona Brady / Cook Shire Council
David Barker / Cook Shire Council
Apologies:
Julie Murphy / Cassowary Coast Regional Council
  1. Explanation of the issues:
  2. Australian Cycling Classics supposed to occur in Gold Coast – tried to bring it up here – targeting May 2013 – Tour de Tropics. From CRC perspective happy to support the event but current offer void due to timelines will need to do another funding grant. New assessment criteria coming in November can be assessed at any time. Peter Hicky – instrumental in Cairns Iron Man in first year.
  3. No organisation within FNQ to coordinate this type of initiative. Who should be coordinating these types of things? TTNQ with Regional events strategy? No, FNQROC. For CRC have an events advisory committee – will look at an event opportunity. TTNQ and CRC co-organised a regional events strategy – CRC created a CRC events strategy. Worked with economist for metrics around triple bottom line. Primarily funded by State, TTNQ and CRC.
  4. How do we use our limited resources and identify best opportunity – CRC last grant round they received 5 times the value available.
  5. Australian Cycling Classics
  6. Issue is that events Queensland – major event for funding – now got major developer in Port Douglas - $100,000. Rob Taylor will be coming up here to look at the track in August
  7. Amanda to organise presentation on the details at next meeting
  1. Tourism and Trails

Tourism and Trails as a major regional initiative. TRC have the federal minister for Tourism here on 8/8 launching the National Landscapes in Kuranda and he is willing to attend a regional planning meeting on Trails. There are a number of groups driving initiatives on a small scale, but following on from DestinatinQ, if the region is to get support for something like this we need to get organised now and think big.

Product development – Is there a shared view that this is something we should chase. How do we manage things like this in terms of product development? (walking, rideing, 4x4, farm stays, supporting services – trails going through the region) limited by budget to get it going. Issue with getting a model to work and funding to implement. From CRC perspective supportive – currently no one working on product development in this sector. – Amanda to

send out details re 8 August 2012.

State Government is seeking "Hero" attractions that are regional and will attract people to QLD.

TRC have so far gained agreement from the following to attend:

  • David Morgans (Director Destination & Market Design at Tourism Queensland)
  • Michael Trout
  • David Kempton
  • Paul Fagg - DEEDI
  • Anne Greentree - Parks Brisbane
  • Paul Chantrill Wet Tropics Management Authority - Communities and Partnerships

TRC also have some private investors and a number of community groups and industry players.

The aim is to share ideas and come away with an action plan to develop a proposal for State Gov't.

One of the major concerns of the councils – ongoing maintenance costs of tracks/trails. Need to levy for maintenance.
