Olympic bobsledding
In Cuba people don’t play winter sports because there’s no snow and ice. But in Jamaica, another country without snow, one group of dreamers did something wonderful – they formed a bobsled1 team and went to the Olympics.
Why a bobsled team? In Jamaica there are carts2 everywhere. People push them to the markets to sell their food. One day, George Fitch, an American businessman, watched a Jamaican cart race3. He saw that the best cart drivers could run very fast and push the cart at the same time. That’s exactly what a bobsled team has to do. At this moment, he decided to form a Jamaican bobsled team.
But it wasn’t easy to find team members. Fitch asked Summer Olympic athletes, but they were nervous that bobsleds were too dangerous. They didn’t want anything to happen to them before the Summer Olympics. So, Fitch had auditions for the team. In the end, he found four men that immediately loved the sport. Three of them were runners. They trained hard to become a team and dreamed to get into the Olympics.
In 1988, they went to the Olympics. Everyone on the other teams and the crowd loved and cheered for them. It didn’t matter that they didn’t win. A very funny movie, called ‘Cool Runnings,’ was made in 1992 about the team at the Olympics.
George Fitch and these four men, from a very hot country, dreamed to take part in the Winter Olympics. Their dream came true, and they proved that anything is possible.
