REPORT FOR THE GLOBAL CAMPAIGN

“Educate to end poverty”

ALBANIA 2005

  • THE EVENT: “BRING YOUR FRIEND TO SCHOOL”

More than 13 thousand children and adults participated at the event “Bring Your Friend to School”. The activities were organized in 11 districts of Albania from the Children’s Human Rights Centre of Albania, World Vision and Albanian Children’s Alliance during the Global Week for Education, which took place between 24-31 April.

During the Action Week “Educate to End Poverty” a wide range of activities were carried out in all CRCA Children’s Clubs in four districts of Albania (Tirana, Shkodra, Korça and Kuçova), Children’s Alliance branches in 6 regions (Korçe, Peshkopi, Kukes, Tirane, Durres, Gjirokaster) and in World Vision Children’s Clubs in 3 districts (Lezhe, Elbasan, Vlore).

During the events the organizers distributed to children, teachers and parents the materials of the campaign, including the locally produced poster “Educate to End Poverty”. Children and teachers were divided in groups where representatives of the Campaign Teams talked to children about child dropouts’ phenomena in Albania, importance of education and what could they do to bring their friends to school. After the discussion children were asked to cut out their friend and join their cutout friends hand to hand. All cutout friends were joined together and were put in the walls of classrooms and school hall.

Finally children were asked to write in paper their message to the President of the Prime-minister of Albania. The messages of children were collected and were sent respectively to each state-representative

  • 140 Parliamentarians receive Campaign message: “Educate to end Poverty”

On 21 of April an open letter was sent to all members of the Albanian Parliament asking them to act to make education possible for all the children in Albania. All MP’s were asked to visit a school in their constituency or otherwise a school in Tirana.

  • Poster “Educate to End Poverty”

After discussions with all the partners of the Action Week, was decided that the publication and distribution of a new poster in Albanian was the appropriate tool to sensitise children, teachers, families and Government officials. This was an important step, because as the Global Campaign materials are provided in English, it will be difficult to distribute and make them understandable for children.

The new poster is simple in terms of picture, colours and messages. It does show the picture of a child writing, and the campaign message “Educate to End Poverty” (EDUKO – Per t’i dhene fund Varferise) is in white and stands in front of a red colour background (same red colour as the Albanian Flag).

The poster was produced in 2000 copies and was distributed widely by all organisations participating in the Action Week.

  • Public Statement “EDUCATE TO END POVERTY”

In 22 April a Statement was sent to all the printed and electronic media in Albania. The statement was distributed also electronically in the mailing list of CRCA and those of the partners. The main aim of the statement was to make an open call to the Albania Government and President to increase the budget of education, improve schooling conditions and assist the return to school of all the children who have dropped out of it.

  • Press Conference “Educate to End Poverty”

The pres conference took place 29 April 2005, with the main aim to inform the mass media in Albania about the problems children face in schools, child dropouts, raise the concern on disable children education and to present to the journalists the achievements and results of the Action Week in Albania. The press conference was organized in cooperation with CRCA, CISP and World Vision.

A press statement was handed out to the journalist at the start of the press conference. Almost all Albanian national media was present. Meanwhile from the printed media were present: Gazeta Ballkan, Gazeta Metropol, Gazeta Panorama, Gazeta Shekulli, Gazeta Republika, Gazeta Korrieri etj.
