INTRODUCTION

Jan Utthan Samiti is a non-profit making, secular organization, operating in Jharkhand state particularly in the district of Ranchi since 1985. Its distinct from others in the sense that it is being managed by trained and determined team of professionals (ex students of Xavier Institute of Social Service, Ranchi) who believe in people’s power through participation, democratization.

JUS has relentlessly struggled to accomplish its goals and objectives transforming its hopes and aspiration into realities and achievement. Its approach and management style has always been embedded with effective leadership, innovation and participation. Over the years it has not only grown in size but also been armed with enormous capacity to handle multiplicity of activities. So far it has proved its potential.

JUS is registered under the Societies Registration Act, Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and Income Tax Act.

OUR OBJECTIVES

JUS aims for ensuring decent standard of living for poor and deprived masses of Chotanagpur in the fields of Education, Health, Economic, Culture and Environment with emphasis on –

Initiating action research on issues related to area and community.

Providing capacity building training among people.

Taking up field projects on experimental basis for new idea/concepts.

Networking and advocacy on issues of community concern.

Striving for gender sensitization and gender development.

OPERATIONAL AREA:

JUS’s operational area is whole of newly formed Jharkhand State (Earlier it was chotanagpur plateau). However the concentration of activities are so far in Ranchi and Khunti districts mainly in four blocks, namely Khunti – 50 villages, Karra – 10 villages, Burmu – 10 villages, & Chanho – 15 Villages.

TARGET GROUP:

The target groups of JUS are mainly Tribals and Dalits with emphasis on women, children, landless, agriculture labourers, marginal and small farmers belonging to these communities.

MAJOR PROBLEMS FACING THE TARGET GROUP

Economic:

  • Low income due to un-utilization and under utilization of land.
  • Low income due to poor irrigation and support services.
  • Migration during the lean period for employment.
  • Increased level of indebtedness.
  • Lack of fair prices for agriculture produces and monopoly of traders.

Social:

  • Lack of awareness among society.
  • Social cost of migration especially with female folk.
  • Detachment of community life.
  • Lack of educational facilities and improper functioning of existing schools.
  • Lack of interest among parents about value of education particularly for the girl child resulting in their low participation.

Health:

  • Wide prevalence of endemic diseases.
  • Poor quality of health services/facilities.
  • Ineffective delivery system.
  • Increasing rate of mal-nutrition among children and women.

Cultural:

  • Fading tribal values, culture and practices.
  • Loosing community feeling for individualistic pattern.

Environment:

  • Depletion of forest resources has badly affected the livelihood and environment.
  • Agricultural productivity is decreasing.
  • Disappearing of forest disintegrating tribal way of life.
