ACES STORY

John is a 12-year old boy who lives with his mother, father and a 14-year old sister. He also has an older brother (17-years old) who is in juvenile detention for selling drugs and theft. John’s father has been physically and emotionally abusive to hismother. His father has used harsh physical discipline with all of the children since they were infants. Things are especially scary for John when his father has been drinking. John’s mother seems very depressed. When things get difficult at home, there may be no dinner that night or meals the next day. John is really close to his grandfather who takes him to basketball games and checks in to see how things are going with him. Johnis frequently absent from school and falls asleep in class a lot. He has trouble focusing and following directions. Some of his classmates have been harassing him—sending nasty e-mails and putting him down in front of other classmates. John started getting into fights that have landed him in the principal’s office on two different occasions. He can’t explain what happened with the latest scuffle he was involved in—something just made him “go off.” John has a good relationship with one of histeachers who seems to understand him even though he hasn’t told her anything—she has taken time to talk with him alone and has shown him some ways to calm down such as taking deep breaths while counting to ten and thinking about things that make him feel good about himself when he feels like he is getting agitated or zoning out. John loves basketball and is really good at it. His teacher talked to the coach about having John mentor some of the other students on shooting baskets.
