Guidelines for Project Proposal

Engineering design is often defined asthe process of developing and/or building a system, a component, or a process to meet some desired needs. It is an iterative ongoing decision-making process. The process invokes knowledge frombasic sciences, such as mathematics and physics, as well as engineering sciences such as electrical, civil, mechanical, etc..

Such knowledge is used optimally to solve a certain problem and meet some stated objectives. Dym defines engineering design as:“Engineering design is the systematic, intelligent generation and evaluation of specifications for artifacts whose form and function achieve stated objectives.”

To assist students in developing a good project proposal, we provide below a comprehensive outline for a design proposal. Depending upon the scope and size of your projects, you may decide to merge or omit some of these sections.

  1. Introduction

What is the project about and what is the motivation? Who are the expected end users? Describe briefly any functional requirements and specifications. Comment on the importance of the work and briefly outline the expected results. (5-10lines)

  1. Design Strategy

Describe your approach to this project, including the process you will follow, the validation of the model, and performance verification. Consider design alternatives and ways to evaluate them.A block diagram may be helpful to convey how different components and stages in your design fit together. (1/2-1 page)

  1. Plan of Action

The plan of action consists of various tasks needed to implement the design strategy. The tasks should be linked to the objectives and the different components. The tasks should be divided among the team members for a good experience for all. All must share all activities (software, literature review, implementation , testing, etc..) BUT not necessarily in exactly the same proportion. (1/2 page)

  1. Tasks

List the main tasks and describe these while following the order of the project progress or the order of components of the project. (1/2 page)

  1. Project Schedule

Describe of timeline and milestones using, for example, Gantt chart. List the tasksand the team members responsible for each one.

  1. Cost Analysis

Include a cost of the project based on labor and material. Include a list of parts, lab equipment, and shop services. Give an estimated cost of the components within the system and also of any addition and improvement of the system.
