I.  Project Introduction

Photography emerged as a form of technology, communication, and art during the Gilded Ages. Photography

helps bring history alive, and thousand of photographs characterize American history during the Progressive

Era.

Over the next few days, you will conduct research and analysis of the photography from the Progressive Era and create a photo exhibit reflective of at least three major themes of the Progressive Era. The class will vote for the following categories:

All three forms attached must be completed and approved by Ms. Stuart BEFORE you may move onto Research & Analysis.

III.  Research & Analysis

You will explore online photography resources as provided on my teacher project webpage located on the AHS Library website. After spending time exploring the websites, you will select and analyze five photographs from the Progressive Era using the method you learned during the “Picturing Modern America 1880-1920” activity. The photographs you select MUST represent at least three of the themes of the Progressive Era listed below:

1)  Big Business / Labor: Child labor, unions & strikes, worker and consumer safety.

2)  Urbanization & Immigration: Nativism, muckrakers, social reforms.

3)  Women’s Issues: Suffrage, changing role of women in society, charity movement.

4)  Political / Economic Reform: Grange, Populist Party, municipal reforms, 17th Amendment, tariffs, gold vs silver standard.

5)  Temperance / Prohibition: 18th Amendment, crusaders, Carrie Nation.

6)  Progressive Presidents: Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson.

7)  Environmental Conservation: John Muir, Gifford Pinchot, National Park System.

Keep in mind you are looking for photographs with a story to tell. BE SURE you SAVE links to your photographs by copying and pasting the links into the presentation (Powerpoint or Google Slides) on the each slide. *See Exhibit Set Up!
