A work session of the School Board of Culpeper County was held November 6, 2006 in the School Board Central Office (Colin Owens Conference Room) at 450 Radio Lane at 6:00 p.m.

Present were Elizabeth Hutchins (Cedar Mountain District), Chair; Claudia Vento (West Fairfax District), Vice Chair; Leanne Jenkins (Jefferson District); Division Superintendent Dr. David Cox, Clerk of the Board Jeff Shomo, Construction Project Manager Hunter Spencer and Deputy Clerk Pearl Jamison.

Absent were Robert Beard (East Fairfax District); Robert Jenkins III (Catalpa District); George Dasher (Stevensburg District); and Jennifer McCauley (Salem District).

At 6:08 p.m. Ms. Hutchins called the meeting to order and Dr. Cox called the roll.

Due to the fact that a quorum was not present, the consensus was to approve the agenda.

Dr. Cox said staff wanted to take the opportunity this evening to bring the board up-to-date on the new elementary school. He said this same information will be given to the Board of Supervisors and Town Council at the luncheon meeting tomorrow.

Dr. Cox referred members to the handout at their places. He said in October staff visited several schools that were built by Crabtree and Rohrbaugh.

Mr. Spencer discussed the preliminary design which is a result of a number of meetings. Mr. Spencer said the staff proposes to build the school in the middle of the town section of the piece of property. He said the bus and parent traffic will be separate. He said there are approximately 150 parking spaces on the site. He said the school will be a two-level school with grade entrances on both levels. He said the architect and engineering teams have already had meetings with VDOT.

Dr. Cox said this building allows alot of flexibility. Discussion ensued regarding the multipurpose space. Mrs. Hutchins noted that parents visiting the school must go through the office before they can gain entry to the building. Mrs. Jenkins expressed concern with the number of student bathrooms.

Mr. Spencer said there is a meeting with the architects tomorrow. He said after that meeting he hopes to have more shots from the outside. He said we plan to stay with the steel frame. Ms. Vento asked about turning lanes. Mr. Spencer said the length and placement will be determined by the traffic study.

The meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
