Instructions for Proper Grazing Use Worksheet

This worksheet is to be used as part of the monitoring program to check and certify if the 528 Prescribed Grazing practice is being properly implemented. The dates when proper grazing use checks should be conducted on each grazing management unit are specified on the Prescribed Grazing Jobsheet.

This first part of this worksheet is meant to be completed by the initial planner who developed the Prescribed Grazing practice specifications with input from the client. The check of the actual percent of pounds of key grazing species remaining may be conducted by the initial planner or another planner assisting with the check.

Top Section: Fill-in information as requested.

Grazing Unit Name or No.: Enter in this column the name or number of the grazing management unit (e.g., pasture or field) to be used by the client or the number from the client’s conservation plan map.

Acres: Enter in this column the acreage of the grazing unit.

Species of Grazing Animal: Enter the species and class of livestock to be grazed such as: dry cows, cow-calves, ewes and lambs, yearling cattle, 2-year steers, yearling sheep, goats, deer, horses, etc.

Season of Use: Enter the season that the grazing unit will be grazed such as: spring, summer, fall, or winter. Or by months: Sept.– Oct., Nov. – Mar., May – Jul.

Location of Key Grazing Area: Enter in this column a description of the key grazing area in each grazing unit. This may be an ecological site, it may be a portion of a site, or it may be a particular location within a grazing unit such as: S-W portion of grazing unit starting at about 200 yards from pond to fence.

Key Plant(s) for Judging Proper Grazing Use: Enter in this column the key plant species in the key grazing area in each grazing unit by common name on which the planner and the client cooperatively decide proper grazing use will be judged. There may be occasion when you will select two species, in this case enter the names of both species.

Minimum Percent of Key Species at End of Grazing Period (or lbs. per Acre): Enter in this column, the percent by air-dry weight, of the current year’s growth of the key plant species that should be left ungrazed at the end of the grazing season. Where specifications call for a certain number of pounds of forage to be left ungrazed per acre of the key plant species, then the specified pounds per acre should be entered.

Actual Percent or Pounds Remaining: Enter in this column, by calendar year, the percent by air-dry weight or pounds remaining of the key plant species in each grazing unit. This measurement should be based on the key plant species on the key grazing area, at or near the end of the grazing call for use in percent of current year’s growth, enter the percentage of growth ungrazed. If use is specified in amount of forage to be left ungrazed in pounds per acre, then enter the pounds per acre left ungrazed.

Initials of Planner Assisting with Application Check: The planner who is assisting with the check of the actual percent or pounds remaining, should enter their initials.

Date of Application Check: The planner who is assisting with the check of the actual percent or pounds remaining, should enter the date when the check was conducted.
