Assessor Guidance

The following information and documentation should be used prior, during and following the assessment:

  • Please refer to the Qualification Specification for information relating to assessor and resource requirements, and other useful information relevant to the qualification.
  • Prior to the assessment beginning, you should ensure the individual meets the eligibility requirements to become an MOT Tester.
  • The learner will need to have created a user account on the MOT Testing Service prior to starting this assessment, as they will require access to the training mode area of the service. This can be completed here:
  • You will need to play the part of the vehicle presenter, both at the start of the assessment and the end of the assessment. This is to enable assessment of customer handling skills.
  • You are not able to play the part of the assistant – another individual is required to carry this out.
  • The learner should have access to the MOT Testing Service (training mode), the MOT Testing Guide, relevant testing manual, and any other additional information normally found in a Vehicle Testing Station (VTS).
  • Explain to the learner the assessment process prior to starting the assessment.
  • You are not required to follow a script when presenting the vehicle for test, but to simply meet the learner, assessing how they deal with you prior to accepting the vehicle for test. After the MOT Test the learner should feedback the results of the test.
  • You will also be assessing how the learner communicates with the assistant during the test.
  • Because (in most cases) the vehicle will have no defects, additional oral questions should be asked during the assessment relating to theoretical defects. The learner can use the inspection manual for reference. These questions should vary between learners. A note of the questions asked and responses given by the learner should be recorded.
  • Following completion of the MOT test you will need to provide feedback to the learner. They will be required to use this feedback and their own identified training needs to complete the Personal Development Plan. They should be able to take a copy of this away with them at the end of the assessment. You should also keep a copy of this for quality assurance purposes.
