POYNTON CRICKET MATTERS

ISSUE Fifty – fIVE

MAY 2011

ADAM KENDRICK R.I.P.

The club was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Adam Kendrick, aged 39, in the early hours of last Friday morning, 6th May. Adam, or "Jibber" as he was affectionately known, was a real “character” of our club. He made a very significant contribution over many years in many ways: as a player, as 1st XI cricket scorer for much of the club’s greatest ever season in 1995, as club photographer for all of our sporting and social events, and above all as an unstinting supporter of cricket and all other sports at Poynton Sports Club. He was an extremely popular member and will be greatly and sadly missed by everybody within the club and all that knew him.

All of our love and thoughts are with his wife Gillian as well as all of the Spurrell and Kendrick families at this very sad time.

Adam's funeral will be held at Norbury Parish Church, Hazel Grove tomorrow (Tuesday May 17) at 11.00am.

FIRSTS MAKE UNCERTAIN START

Unfortunately four weeks into the new season the first team are still to taste victory. Marple were first to inflict defeat on us, as we were all out for 145 – four sixes from Rick Clark in an innings of 62 among the few highlights. Marple cruised to a nine wicket win.

Cheadle Hulme’s batsmen enjoyed a sunny day at Poynton with a lightning fast outfield, posting 253/5. Adam Williams bowled a tight spell at the end after Cheadle Hulme had at one stage threatened to post even more. Poynton began well in reply, and hopes of a famous run chase were well and truly alive at 136/1. But after 58 from Paul Gould, 48 from Brian Kingham and 25 from returning Aussie Rhys Burke, the innings collapsed to 164 all out, including a hat-trick.

It was back to defeat by nine wickets at Bollington. A slightly rain-reduced game saw Poynton again make a decent start: Rhys (47) and Paul (33) again in the runs. Danny Williams would later make 23 not out on his league debut, but no other player passed four as we stumbled to 129/8. This total was no match for Bollington and their very good overseas player.

Agonisingly, rain intervened last Saturday on the first occasion the team found themselves in a winning position. 5/32 from Rhys and 3/30 from Chris Oake bowled out Heaton Mersey for 105, but then the weather closed in and prevented further play.

Cheadle Hulme have also accounted for Poynton’s hopes in the Twenty20 Cup knockout. Despite 3/23 from Rick Carpenter, we were faced with an imposing 162 to chase, and got off to a disastrous start. Jon Hadley’s 45 not out and 33 from Brian eventually lifted us to 129/7.

NEW CAPTAIN JIMMY SHINES FOR SECONDS

There is much better news of the club’s second team as they try and fight back from two successive relegations. Things didn’t bode well when first opponents Congleton bowled us out for 109 – Adam Williams top scoring on 22. But Congleton lost regular wickets in reply and were eventually dismissed for 99, with nine of the wickets falling to players called Williams! New captain Jimmy Williams played his part with 2/21, but the real star of the show was Jimmy’s son Danny, who took five for eight in 6.2 overs, all watched by Jimmy’s youngest son Chris as scorer. The unrelated Adam Williams bagged two wickets as well in this excellent bowling show.

Danny with 52, and Josh Hampson with 49, were the key batters the next week at Mobberley as we posted 205/9. A superb 6/13 from Jimmy then saw the home team routed for 86. Dan Wright took 2/4

Bollington were next, and it was soon three wins out of three. Jimmy’s excellent start to the season continued with a 3/28 return, while Joe Hopkins took 3/34. 41 from Mark Fletcher and 34 from Alex Oswell guided us to a four wicket win.

The excellent start was diluted though by Heaton Mersey. Mark with 50 and Joe with 36 took us to 86/0 in 19 overs, but in the rest of the innings, only Tom Hamnett (56) starred. Mersey reached their target of 187 for the loss of only four wickets.

THIRDS ENJOY SUCCESSFUL START

The 3rd XI have also started well. Firstly there was progression to the knockout stages of the Jack Gardner Trophy for the first time in several years, after winning both of our group matches.

The re-vamped 20 overs competition kicked off with Poynton amassing a formidable 146/4, after an opening stand of 110 between Josh Hampson (55) and Joe Hopkins (45). Stockport never came close, all out for 87 in the face of a superb 4/10 spell from Jake Haresnape.

Josh and Joe, with 32 and 59 respectively, also played their part in an even bigger total against Alderley Edge. Dave Roberts added an unbeaten 32 to take us to 155/4. Alderley made a good start, but could not sustain it and closed on 137/9, with Jake again starring with the ball, this time with a 3/19 return.

The good form continued into the opening league match against Timperley 4th XI. Matthew Warburton’s 81 led the way, and there was 30 from Simon Dunn and 27 at number ten from Josh Noel in our total of 171 all out. Timperley never got going in reply, and Josh’s excellent match continued as he took 4/13 to bowl the opposition out for 120. Dan Wright took 3/27.

The second league match against New Brighton was washed out.

LEGENDS UP AND RUNNING WITH EARLY WINS

Poynton Legends have won their first two matches in this year’s Over 40s Championship, the first over the traditionally strong Marple side. Poynton’s total of 101/9 was spearheaded by 30 retired from Brian Kingham. Then Marple kept ahead of the required rate, but with the score on 97 with ten balls remaining, Brian took his second wicket, leaving Marple with no-one else to come in, being unable to recall their batsman who had retired on 30. Francis Turnbull was the star bowler with 4/22.

Doug Martin joined Brian in reaching the retirement score in a total of 119/4 against Alderley Edge, which proved too much by 17 runs. Nigel Potts (4/17) did much of the damage in bowling out Alderley.

KEY CHANGES TO PLAYING REGS

Please note the following changes to Cheshire County League regulations, in force for this season:

·  Without the permission of the Cricket Committee, no player may make his maiden 1st or 2nd XI appearance of the season for his club during the last five Saturdays of the season unless he has already played in a 1st, 2nd or 3rd XI League fixture, Over 40s game or at junior level.

·  No player who has played for the 1st XI on a Saturday is eligible to play for the 3rd XI on a Sunday or Bank Holiday.

·  Any player over 18 who has played for the club’s 2nd XI on a Saturday is ineligible to play for the 3rd XI on a Sunday.

·  A player cannot make his first appearance of the season for his club from the quarter-final round of a CCL cup competition onwards.

·  In all 3rd XI league matches, no bowler may bowl more than 15 overs in a game.

Advice for club website administrators

County League website supremo Darren Sutcliffe lists the following new advice for club website administrators for the forthcoming season:

1.  Saturday results to be inputted by the home club on the summary screen within 24 hours of the end of 1st XI games and 48 hours of 2nd XI games.

2.  Summary of results to be included in the highlights section with full details on the split of points, especially batting and bowling points.

3.  On the summary screen, selection of correct results should allocate win points and only bonus points to be entered are for batting and bowling points, if any.

4.  Full scorecards to be completed by home clubs within 48 hours of the end of 1st XI games and 96 hours for 2nd XI games.

5.  All players’ names to be listed on the scorecards. No entries of ‘Unsure’ to be shown.

6.  Home clubs to confirm the correctness of the result with a tick in the ‘C’ column.

7.  Away team to check their result has been inputted correctly and confirm also by having a tick showing in the ‘C’ column.

Failure to undertake any of the above within the time scales indicated will result in a fine of £15 for the home club for points 1 – 6 and for the away club regarding point 7.

GIRLS TEAM START SUCCESSFULLY

The ladies team may have departed our club, but female cricket at Poynton continues in the shape of the Under 13 girls team being run in partnership with Stockport Georgians, and this team has convincingly won its first match in the Eastern Division of the Cheshire Women’s League’s junior competition. Poynton scored 281 in the pairs scoring contest, top scorers being Georgia Bath and Lucy Higginbotham, both with 19 not out. Jess Carroll scored 11 without being dismissed and also took 2/7 with the ball as Alderley Edge managed only 217, losing 12 wickets during their innings.

This newsletter actively welcomes match news on any Poynton team. The format of this newsletter suggests the format I would prefer to receive such news. Unfortunately it is not possible for me for reasons of time to write a monthly report from scratch on all Poynton teams, and in this respect I do need others within the club to assist.

Full scorecards from most matches played by Poynton teams are now posted to the Play-Cricket site, these include a 100 per cent start for the Under 18s, who include several players who are mentioned in this newsletter for their starring performances for the club’s senior teams.
