Background to the Post

The role of the Distance Learning Advisor is to ensure all students receive support and subsequently enjoy and achieve their qualifications/studies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Ensure that support is available to all of the distance learning studentsin Higher Education (HE) Equine and that the various elements such as target setting and pastoral support are delivered as appropriate.
  2. Contribute to the induction process with the course teams and ensure students starting their course are appropriately inducted into the College.
  3. Conduct tutorials as required and design appropriate action plans including realistic targets for students on their course.
  4. Support the students to set personal targets, goals and aspirations.
  5. Identify additional support requirements and ensure individual needs are met.
  6. Maintain accurate records and undertake other administrative tasks that relate to progress tracking, support and tutorial processes
  7. Regularly review progress using the appropriate College systems and ensure that where there is a concern regarding progress and performance, this is effectively followed up through actions identified and followed through with the appropriate records.
  8. Ensure support mechanisms are put into place to support students who are identified ‘at risk’.
  9. Ensure accurate pen portraits are prepared for all lecturers and made available to Course Managers.
  10. Provide opportunities on a regular basis for the disclosure of support needs.
  11. Maintain and use Student Files.
  12. Assist and support course managers, tutors and students in obtaining work placements
  13. Co-ordinate and undertake the visiting and assessment of placements for students within the distance learning HE Equine group.
  14. Maintain accurate and up to date records of placement suitability and student progress within placements.
  15. Implement College systems in ensuring students and placements are suitably matched to ensure satisfaction
  16. Advocate and liaise, on behalf of students, with College staff, employers and external agencies.
  17. Support the processes for providing financial support and pursuing additional grants and bursaries available for students.
  18. Take part in staff development.
  19. Ensure the College’s Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety policies and procedures are implemented fully in all activities and functions, to help the College reflect the demographic and gender mix of the catchment area within its programmes and courses, and maintain the highest possible health and safety for its students and staff.
  20. Such duties as the Principal may, from time to time, determine in consultation with the post-holder.
  21. Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults for whom you are responsible and whom you come into contact with.
  22. To ensure a safe working environment for colleagues, students and visitors in line with the HASAW Act and the College Health and Safety Policy.

22.2 hours per week

Annual Leave

The College offers a generous annual leave entitlement to support staff, commencing with 25 days rising to 28 days after 5 years’ service, per annum plus 12 statutory days (Public & bank Holidays) and College closure days for Christmas.

Place of work

The principal place of work will be Moreton Morrell. However, the postholder may be required to work on either a temporary or an indefinite basis at any premises at which we may provide services.

Any offers of appointment will be subject to a disclosure and barring service check, a certificate of good conduct if applicable, plus receipt of satisfactory references, Occupational Health clearance, an understanding of safeguarding and qualifications verification.

  • A professional, personal or vocational qualification at Level 5 or above
  • Literacy qualification at Level 2 or above, or a willingness to undergo personal skills development to achieve Level 2 Literacy during the first 12 months of the post.
  • PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) qualification or equivalent, or the willingness to undergo training during the first 12 months of the post.
  • Experience of working with and supporting students within the broad context of education.
  • The ability to make their own travel arrangements to all sites of Warwickshire College.
  • Demonstrate competent and proficient use of IT
  • A professional, academic or vocational qualification in equine or a related discipline.
  • Effective administration skills and the ability to maintain accurate records
