What is a Material Safety Data Sheet?

A Material Safety Data Sheet is a technical document or bulletin that summarizes the health and safety information available about controlled products. It supplements the warning information on the label.

Why are Material Safety Data Sheets Required?

Having material safety data sheets is important because they contain important emergency information regarding the product and they are required by law. It is a requirement that a material safety data sheet accompany a store-use controlled product. Stores that are not able to produce these sheets when requested by a workplace safety inspector are subject to written orders and fines.

Where can we obtain Material Safety Data Sheets?

Material safety data sheets are created by the manufacturer of the controlled products and can be obtained by contacting the manufacturer directly or by going on the manufacturer’s website. How long are Material Safety Data Sheets valid for?

Material safety data sheets are valid for a period of 36 months or three years. It is important that any sheets that are expired be replaced.

Where should we keep copies of Material Safety Data Sheets?

Although material safety data sheets may be available on a computer or through the internet, inspectors are known to prefer employers to keep physical copies of material safety data sheets on hand. Material safety data sheets should be kept in a binder in the department where the controlled product is used.

Which products require a Material Safety Data Sheet?

Any items used at the store that are under one of the six hazard classes within the WHMIS regulations are known as a controlled product. The WHMIS hazard classes include compressed gases, flammable and combustive material, oxidizing material, poisonous and infectious material, corrosive material and dangerously reactive material. Any controlled product used at the store requires a Material Safety Data Sheet.

Do Foreign Merchandise Authorization (FMA) products require Material Safety Data Sheets?

Foreign Merchandise Authorization (FMA) products require Material Safety Data Sheets if they are classified as a controlled product and they are used by your employees.

Do we need Material Safety Data Sheets for consumer products sold at our store?

No, under the Hazardous Products Act, consumer products sold to consumers at a retail outlet are exempt from the Material Safety Data Sheet requirements. However, if your store uses a consumer product that is also a controlled product, then you will need to ensure a Material Safety Data Sheet is available.
