Position Title:Director of Thomaston-Upson Archives

Job Summary

Thomaston-Upson Archives Director is responsible for promoting the Archives, processing governmental and manuscript materials, and assisting researchers. Incumbent will work with the Upson County records manager to coordinate records management, catalog and preserve the collections. A person in this position will work with other organizations to promote the community’s history and the Archives. The Director will be responsible for training volunteers and supervising employees. Archives Director will seek out grant opportunities to process large collections. The Director shall perform other tasks as decided in conference with the Thomaston-Upson Archives Board.

Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements

or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Arrange, describe, index and prepare government records with the Records Manager
  • Arrange, describe, index and prepare for use manuscript materials
  • Supervise input of Archives’ records into the computer program
  • Answer research questions, register researchers, retrieve materials for researchers, handle photocopy requests and be responsible for the security of the Thomaston-Upson Archives
  • Work with the Upson County Records Manager on Records Retention Schedules
  • Assist in acquiring manuscripts and work with donors
  • Assist in preserving Archives’ collections
  • Assist in developing work projects for volunteers
  • Assist in supervision of the work of student interns
  • Actively look for grants to process collections
  • Create tours for the community to promote its history and the Archives
  • Attendance at appropriate professional and community organizational meetings
  • Membership in the Society of Georgia Archivists and the Georgia Records Association
  • Partnering with the Upson County and City of Thomaston governments, the Upson Historical Society, the Thomaston-Upson Board of Education and other groups on projects
  • Promoting the Thomaston-Upson Archives through speaking engagements
  • Prepare a quarterly report for the Thomaston-Upson Records Advisory Board

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in History, or equivalent job experience
  • Experience in grant writing
  • Experience with volunteer programs
  • Experience in preservation/conservation training
