Job Overview:The Northeast Iowa Food Bank operates a ¼ acre community garden on its premises. We are looking to host a Garden Intern for the spring & summer of 2018. This internship would offer experience working with individuals and groups to carry out various projects, experience in overseeing the cultivation of a wide variety of produce – from seed to harvest, and experience creating an education curriculum surrounding healthy eating and cooking skills.

Interested persons should expect to spend 20 hours a week at the Food Bank working with the Community Garden Manager to plan & host events, take care of day to day maintenance of the garden, and prepare and execute educational and volunteer activities.

Responsibilities:

-Assist with general operations of the NEIFB Community Garden including but not limited to: irrigation, weeding, harvesting, planting, seed starts, greenhouse & equipment maintenance

-Work with groups and individual volunteers to carry out tasks

-Ensure the implementation of best pre and post-harvest food safety practices

-Maintain records of planting, harvesting, and other garden related metrics

-Assist in leading the Garden Nutrition Class including: planning activities, overseeing the children in the garden, and assisting with cooking classes

-Prepare post season evaluation of the Garden and its programs to share with the department

-May be asked to work on Saturdays

Knowledge and Skills Required:

-Experience with backyard or community gardening

-Ability to maintain & accurately record data

-Ability to work with individuals and groups

-Ability to create project outline and follow through with goals and tasks in a timely manner

-Ability to safely work in a kitchen using knives, stoves, and ovens

-Ability to carry at least 40 pounds, withstand reasonable heat and sun exposure
