The New York State Education Department (NYSED), P-12: Office of Special Education is pleased to announce a SWIS Facilitator Training sponsored by the New York State Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Technical Assistance Center (NYS PBIS TAC) and Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Support Centers Behavior Specialists.
What is SWIS:
SWIS is a web-based software system for collecting and summarizing office discipline referral data in schools for the purpose of designing effective school-wide and individual student interventions. The three primary elements of SWIS are:
· an efficient system for gathering information;
· a web-based computer application for data entry and report generation; and
· a practical process for using information for decision making regarding effective interventions.
These three elements give school personnel the capacity to determine patterns in the behavior of individual students, the behavior of groups of students, behaviors occurring in specific settings, and behaviors occurring during specific time periods of the school day. SWIS reports indicate times and/or locations prone to elicit problem behaviors, and allow teachers and administrators to shape school-wide environments to maximize students' academic and social achievements.
Session Overview:
This three-day training workshop will be delivered by certified SWIS Facilitator Trainers. Upon completion of the training participants will be able to:
· discuss the purpose and rationale for using data for decision-making;
· use the SWIS database;
· analyze data obtained from SWIS to problem-solve school-wide and individual discipline issues;
· train select school staff on using SWIS; and
· consult with school teams and provide technical assistance for problem-solving school discipline issues.
