Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for afixed term position as a Polymer Materials Scientistwith the School of Medicine at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

This position is funded by Enterprise Ireland and is available immediatelyto contract end date of 31st October 2018.

The role is part of a new Structural Heart research group in NUI Galway working on the development of a breakthrough polymer heart valve leaflet. This is an exciting opportunity to join with us on developing our material solution that has the potential to solve the longstanding challenge of a durable alternative to animal tissue in heart valve replacements.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will will support detailed development of the next-generation material for use in TAVR valveleaflets from initial concept development to pre-clinical trial evaluation.

Duties:

As part of the Engineering team the successful candidate will be responsible for next generation development of a breakthrough polymer heart valve and reliability analysis within the defined Product Development Phase.

  • You will work within a team of engineers and scientists to develop and refine the existing baseline material for this challenging cardiac environment.
  • Defining the appropriate technical and performance specifications, developing test articles, co-ordinating testing in-house and with external partners, reporting on these trials.
  • Characterisation of polymeric materials for heart valve applications using various mechanical and analytical techniques.

Qualifications/Skills required / Essential Requirements:

  • Ph.D.in Chemical Engineering, Material Sciences or related field with Polymer Science emphasis.
  • Evidence of experience working with and refining base polymer materials within the medical device space.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Understanding of Polyurethane polymer properties and must possess deep knowledge of the relationship between polymer structure, morphology, processing, and mechanical properties.
  • Familiarity with various polymer processing techniques.
  • Experience with polymer material design and synthesis.
  • Knowledge of polymer relationships in structure and behaviour.
  • Proficient in polymer characterization methods.
  • Capability to lead polymer material test method development for process and design interactions
  • Awareness of design and process validation methodologies
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills

Salary: €50,000 to 55,000 per annum (/pro-rata - for part time or shorter contracts)

Start date: Position is available immediately.
