AUGUST DEADLINES:
RPO, Inc. with ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC: Rho Psi Omega Chapter is sponsoring the 6th Annual Debutante Cotillion and Scholarship Program. The program is designed to build character and leadership in young women who are rising Juniors and Seniors in high school.
DEADLINE: August 1st
SEPTEMBER DEADLINES:
LE TENDRE EDUCATION FUND SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE HOMELESS: This scholarship is available to students who are homeless or who have been homeless during their school attendance, and who have demonstrated average or higher than average achievement. Two $1500 scholarships will be awarded.
Qualifications:
- Completed application
- Essay about the impact of homelessness on the their lives and their desire to attend college (500-1,000 words, please see essay evaluation criteria listed on site)
- Official school transcript
- Minimum of one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or other adult who can speak to the applicant’s qualification and experiences

JEWISH GUILD FOR THE BLIND SCHOLARSHIPS: The Jewish Guild for the Blind provides scholarships for college bound high school students who are legally blind. For more information visit their website at www.jgb.org/guildscholar.asp

INITIATIVE AND VOLUNTEERISM IN YOUTH: This scholarship is sponsored by the Alpha Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Criteria:
- Must be a resident of Mecklenburg County.
- Nominee must be a high school senior

ATLAS SHRUGGED ESSAY CONTEST: Essays will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of philosophic meaning of Atlas Shrugged. Essay submissions are evaluated in a fair and unbiased four-round judging process.
Qualifications:
-Must be a current 12th grader
-No application is required. Contest is open to students worldwide
-Essay must be between 800-1600 words
-Essay must be solely the work of the entrant. Plagiarized essays will be disqualified
-Entrants may submit only one essay.
-A stapled cover sheet with the following information: Name, Mailing Address, email address, the name and address of your school, topic selected (#1, 2, or 3); declared major (if applicable), the name of the teacher who assigned the essay (if applicable)
-Employees of the Ayn Rand Institute, its board of directors and their immediate family members are not eligible for this contest
-All entries become property of the Ayn Rand Institute and will not be returned
Topics:
1. According to John Galt, selfishness is both moral and practical. Explain what he means by this and how events of the story illustrate and dramatize his point.
2. Explain the meaning and wider significance of the following quote: “The words ‘to make money’ hold the essence of human morality”. According to the story Atlas Shrugged, what ideas underlie the opposing maxims that “money is the root of all evil” and that “money is the root of all good”?
3. Capitalism’s defenders usually appeal to the “public good”. Contrast their approach to capitalism to Ayn Rand’s approach in Atlas Shrugged.

DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY
Senior ladies who demonstrate exemplary moral standards with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

- 2.5 GPA or higher

OCTOBER DEADLINES:
UNC-Chapel Hill / Morehead-Cain Foundation Scholarship: To be eligible for this scholarship a student must show evidence of outstanding achievement in the following four criteria: Leadership; Scholarship; Moral Force of Character; and Physical Vigor. Only four seniors from Rocky River will be selected to be nominated by the school for this prestigious award. Nominees usually rank in the top 10% of the senior class. Other students that are not nominated by the school are able to apply directly for this award. Students that would like to be nominated by the school should see Mrs. Brand in Guidance for a preliminary application.

PARKS SCHOLARSHIP: Associated with North Carolina State University, this scholarship provides a superb educational opportunity for exceptionally talented and well-prepared young men and women to develop leadership skills and commitment to public service.

WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN AWARD: The Wendy’s High School Heisman award honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership.

AES ENGINEERING SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP: Will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by the essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.

THE JOHN MONTGOMERY BELK SCHOLARSHIP: provides academically gifted and dynamic student leaders an active framework in which to develop as scholars, leaders, and individuals. One of the nation's most prestigious and generous undergraduate scholarships, the program is built around Davidson's belief that each Belk Scholar possesses unique talents that should be recognized and nurtured. COCA-COLA SCHOLARS PROGRAM: Applicant must be a current high school senior that has a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher the end of their junior year. NOVEMBER DEADLINES
RON BROWN SCHOLARS PRORGRAM: Seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Applications and more information are available on-line at www.ronbrown.org
There are two deadlines for this application: (1) Applications that are postmarked by November 1st will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholars Program and forwarded to a select and limited number of additional colleges and scholarship providers. (2) Applications that are postmarked by January 9th will only be considered for the Ron Brown Scholars Program.
THOMAS WOLFE SCHOLARSHIP:
This scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill is a full undergraduate support for student writers. Thomas Wolfe was a novelist and short-story writer who wanted to see students succeed in the Creative Writing Program at Chapel Hill. Winners of this scholarship will earn a minor in Creative Writing during their college experience.
Qualifications:
- Complete an application
- Personal Essay (limit 500 words) on the topic “Why I write” PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE, KINKOS BIND OR PLACE IN A THREE RING BINDER (Binder clips and Paper clips are preferred)
o WRITING SAMPLE MUST BE ON WHITE 8.5x 11 PAPER IN 12 POINT TYPE
§ If you are submitting FICTON, 25 pages, double-spaced, minimum; 50 pages double-spaced maximum. You may submit short stories, a novella, or chapters from a novel-in-progress. If submitting a longer work, please include a one-page synopsis of the project
§ If you are submitting POETRY, 20 pages minimum; 40 pages maximum
§ If you are submitting DRAMATIC WORK, one full-length play, 40-60 pages, maximum OR two to three one-act plays, 40-60 pages combined maximum
§ If you are submitting LITERARY JOURNALISM or CREATIVE NON-FICTION, (personal narratives, travel or nature essays, book or film criticism, profiles, memoir, belles-lettres), 25 pages double-spaced minimum, 50 pages double-spaced maximum
§ If you are submitting in MULTIPLE GENRES, 25 pages minimum, 60 pages maximum.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes from people who are able to comment on aspects of your creativity and ambition, including one (1) from a teacher who is familiar with your writing
- Literary Prizes/Citations and Publications: please send documentation and/or a clear description of the nature of your awards. Also send copies of recent publications as they appear in journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. You do not need to send the original periodical if you send other documentation to verify authenticity or publications (photocopy of magazine cover, table of contents, letter from editor, etc.) Maximum number of copies: 5

RON BROWN SCHOLARS PROGRAM:
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS @ DALLAS/EUGENE MCDERMOTT SCHOLARS PROGRAM: This scholarship covers all expenses of a superb four-year academic education at the University of Texas at Dallas, in concert with a diverse array of intensive extracurricular experiences, including internships, travel and cultural enrichment.
Qualifications:
- Four types of recommenders: Counselor, Academic recommender, Extracurricular activities recommender, Personal recommender or recommender of your choice (this may be a second academic or extracurricular or a personal recommender)
- Must be a rising 12th grader

LEVINE SCHOLARS: Associated with UNC-Charlotte will include: full tuition, room and board, a new laptop computer, and four summers of experience. A grand total of $90,000.
Qualifications:
Current High School Senior
Enroll in UNCC for the fall term after graduation
3.8 to a 4.0 GPA (unweighted)
1800-2400 on the three combined sections of the SAT or 29-36 on the ACT composite
Demonstrate a commitment to community service; hold an academic record that reflects a sustained passion for knowledge and posses a capacity for ethical leadership

BELK SCHOLARSHIP: The Belk Scholarship, Davidson’s flagship merit scholarship program, is for those students who have reached the highest order of academic and personal accomplishment-those students who; demonstrate purposeful engagement in the classroom, with student and civic organizations, and on the athletic field, or in the arts. And for students who exhibit intellectual curiosity and commitment to both their local and global communities. Belk Scholars also receive two summer stipends, up to $3,000 each for international travel and study.
Counselor Nominations

SUSAN G. KOMEN SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is established to help students who would find attending college to be a significant financial burden due to the loss of a parent or guardian to breast cancer or their own breast cancer diagnosis at age 25 or younger. The award is a generous scholarship of $10,000 a year up to four years to attend a state university in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Scholarship recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, financial need, and demonstrated leadership potential.
Qualifications:
- Must have lost a parent/guardian to breast cancer or be a survivor diagnosed at 25 years or younger
- Must be a high school senior
- Must attend a state supported college or university in the state where they permanently reside (this would be a North Carolina school)
- 2.8 GPA or higher
- US Citizen or documented permanent resident of the US
- Never at any time have been subject to any disciplinary action by any institution or entity, including, but not limited to, any educational or law enforcement agency

GARDNER WEBB FELLOWS: Associated with Gardner Webb University totaling over 1 million dollars in all!!!
Presidential Fellows Scholarships (5 total): full tuition, room and board
University Fellows Scholarships (2 total): 80% tuition scholarship
Qualifications for both scholarships:
- Current high school senior
- 3.6 GPA
- 1130 SAT (Reading and Math) or 24 ACT score
- Students should meet the academic requirements, benefit from a smaller university, and eloquently represent Gardner Webb’s Christian institution

EMMA H. DUNLAPP SCHOLARSHIP: The Rameses Court #78 daughter of Isis of Charlotte was established to provide financial assistance to individuals enrolled in an institution of higher learning. Financial assistance is based on need, academic performance, and leadership potential.
Qualifications:
Must have a GPA of 2.5 or above
Show proof of acceptance at an academic, vocational, or technical school for post-secondary studies
Must demonstrate financial need
Must provide evidence of volunteer activities he/she has performed
Must have leadership potential as evidenced by school and/or community activities
