Rules for End Punctuation

The way that you punctuate the end of a sentence is very important for the interpretation of your readers. Look at the tremendous difference between:

The movie starts at 7:30.

The movie starts at 7:30?

A few rules about end punctuation:

Rule #1: Place a period at the end of a statement.

Examples: The packets are in the office.

The pen is underneath your desk.

Rule #2: Place a question mark after a written question.

Examples: Have you seen my jacket?

How are you today?

Rule #3 Place an exclamation point after an exciting sentence for emphasis. Everything is not that exciting! Do not overuse exclamation points! It makes the reader feel like he’s being shouted at! It also detracts emphasis when you really mean it!!!

Examples: My hair is on fire!

Watch out for that rattlesnake!
