Permanent Position – POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY

Duty Location: Morrision, Colorado

Organizational Unit: Region 2 - Pike and SanIsabelNational Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC), South Platte Ranger District Office.

Opportunity Type: We may soon be looking to fill this position permanently and are outreaching this position to identify prospective applicants.

Unit Description: The recreational opportunities on the South Platte District are enormous: approximately 70% of its use occurring as dispersed activities such as camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, and tubing.Some of the unique opportunities found on the South Platte include:

  • 115 miles of off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails in the Rampart Range area, with a new difficult single track trail;
  • 70 miles of South Platte River Recreation (visited by 700,000 people a year);
  • Approximately 50 miles of mountain bike trails; and
  • Two wilderness areas: Lost Creek Wilderness and Mount Evans Wilderness.

Dispersed recreation on the District represents the greatest use by the public. Examples of dispersed recreation activities include:

  • OHVs and ATV's
  • hiking and horseback riding use on 250 miles of trails
  • fishing in one of the most productive rivers in the U.S.
  • tubing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting on the North and South Forks of the South Platte River
  • cross-country skiing and snowmobiling
  • dispersed camping along the North and South Forks of the South Platte River, Geneva Creek, Jackson Creek and the Rampart Range Road

Position Detail: The Administrative Support Assistant on the South Platte Ranger District serves as the principal assistant to the District Ranger. They will assist all departmental staff as needed with general support services such as human resource policy and changes, paycheck 8, and assistance in hiring, onboarding and terminations. They will have a working knowledge of administrative policies issued by the Department of Labor, Office of Personnel Management and the Forest Service to advise and assist. They will act as the office manager on the South Platte Ranger District.

Major duties will also include procurement of office supplies, monitoring office supply stock levels and purchasing and the upkeep of office equipment. They will track the district office supply budget and assist other departments with their budgets and workplans utilizing required Forest Service programs. They will act as accounts receivable and accounts payable for the District.

This position supervises the visitor front desk position (plus a summer seasonal) and acts as unit collection officer for the annual Christmas tree program, map and pass sales and other Forest Service product sales. They will back-up the front desk as needed.

SOUTH PLATTE RANGER DISTRICT

The 460,000 acre South Platte Ranger District lies adjacent to southwest metropolitan Denver, outside the town limits of Morrison, CO. It lies due west of the Denver Metropolitan area in Jefferson, Park, Douglas, Teller, and Clear Creek Counties. The South Platte Ranger District houses the Region 2 Speciality Mule Packstring, as well as Devil’s Head Fire Lookout Tower.

The South Platte Ranger District is located east of the Continental Divide in the central Rocky Mountains and lies adjacent to the Denver Metro area.

It is 460,000 acres in size with elevations ranging from 5,800 feet in the east, to over 14,000 feet in the north. The district’s proximity to Denver, with a population of over 2 million people, results in 2,500,000+ visits a year to the South Platte.

Lakewood, Colorado is the largest metropolitan area located approximately 15 miles from the South Platte Ranger Offices. As of 2015 the median home value in Lakewood was $264.000. Average rentals for all apartments was $1,100 per month. Average rent in metro Denver was $1291.00.
Nearby healthcenter and hospitals include St Anthony’s hospital in Lakewood, St Joseph’s and Denver Health in Denver, Exempla Luthern in Wheatridge and Swedish in Englewood.
Morrison Colorado is a small foothills community located just 6 miles south of Lakewood on Highway 285. It is best known as home of Red Rocks Amphitheater. Housing and rentals in Morrison are both slightly higher than in Lakewood.
Outdoor activities abound! Several world class Alpine and Nordic ski areas are located within an hour’s drive away. And, you can snowshoe out your back door. Summer time rock-climbing, hiking and camping are just around the corner.
