Answers: ă,ā,ä k,s d f g,j ŏ,ō,ōō s,z kw,k

Teachers: If your student hesitates or mispronounces any of the sounds of the above round letters, he needs to start phonogram study with the round letters (Download Phonograms 1 – 73 from the round letters are the first sounds presented in this set.) and follow the procedure described in Step 9 of PRESCRIPTION FOR READING SUCCESS. Teachers: If your student hesitates or mispronounces any of the sounds of the above straight letters, he needs to start phonogram study with the straight letters (Download Phonograms 1-73; the straight letters are right after the round letter words.) and follow the procedure described in Step 12 of PRESCRIPTION FOR READING SUCCESS. If he knows all the sounds for these letters, make sure he can write them correctly as described in Step 12 of PRESCRIPTION FOR READING SUCCESS. Once that is accomplished, go on to the Step 13.

Test 3 – Two or More Letters Phonograms(The correct sounds are underlined within words just belowthe phonogramletters. All answers must be included for the student to be considered a master of that phonogram.)

Teachers: If your student made mistakes on any of the above phonograms, download Phonograms 1 – 73 found at Even if your student has mastered some of the phonograms already, I would recommend that he review the mastered ones once a day to keep fluent. The unknown phonograms should be studied as in Step 14 of PRESCRIPTION FOR READING SUCCESS. On the back of Phonograms 27 – 73, the practice page number in the VICTORY DRILL BOOK for each specific phonogram is listed.

Test 4 – Short and Long Vowels(The first line contains only the short vowel sound. The second and third lines contain only the long vowel sound with a silent ‘e’ at the end of the word. Write down how your student mispronounces any word for future reference.)

Read these nonsense words as well and as quickly as you can:

fensaf pud softid bep kib gat lomwup

sapepunecofetibeflatblime

chopedruke

Teachers: Note any mistakes on line one. If your student has problems with any of the following short vowel sounds, start on the appropriate page in the Victory Drill Book, orderable through which reinforces that a vowel is short between two consonants with no other vowels in the word. Start Victory Drill Book drills on page 1 for ă, page 2 for ĕ, page 4 for ĭ, page 6 for ŏ, and page 8 for ŭ. If there are no mistakes with the short sound words, note mistakes on line two and three. If your student has problems with the following longvowel sounds, start on the appropriate page: ā, p. 40; ī, p. 42; ō, p. 44; and ū, p. 46. Look on page V (Roman Numeral five) for the goal speed for your student’s reading level.

Test 5 – Prefixes and Suffixes (Teachers: In each little box, write any mispronunciations of the underlined part that you hear.)

Read these nonsense words as quickly and as well as you can:

Teacher: If there are any mistakes in pronouncing the prefixes in boxes 1-15,download SYLLABICATION WORKSHEETS from and study prefixes when you get to Step 23 of PRESCRIPTION FOR READING SUCCESS. If there are any mistakes in pronouncing the suffixes in boxes 16 – 28, download SYLLABICATION WORKSHEETS and study thesuffix section when you get to Step 23 of PRESCRIPTION FOR READING SUCCESS. Otherwise, skip Step 23.

If you haven’t done so already, give your student the Spelling Placement Test that came with your PRESCRIPTION FOR READING SUCCESS so that you can start him on the proper Spelling List of the ten available. This will prevent the Spelling List from being too hard lest your student give up in frustration, or too easy, lest your student’s learning slow down.

Once you have finished administering all the placement tests, you are ready to begin instruction by downloading the correct components from and ordering the correct comprehension and drill materials as well. Remember, hard work will pay many dividends. Onward to success!!!
