“LIGHT TO EDUCATION”

Scholarship

Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. is a social fraternity founded on April 4th, 1986 at the University of Iowa. Out of the 18 founding fathers, 16 were of Latino/Hispanic ancestry, sought to create an organization that was united under the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service and Cultural Awareness. They created Sigma Lambda Beta as a means to empower one another and other minority students; to better themselves, their campus, and their communities. They also wanted to share their unique cultures with other people. Over the past 20 years, these principles and ideals have allowed Sigma Lambda Beta to flourish, as there are currently 86 undergraduate chapters at universities from coast to coast.

Sigma Lambda Beta seeks to promote the equality of all peoples, regardless of race, culture, or ethnicity. Our principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service, and Cultural Awareness area guiding light to that goal. It is with these principles in mind, that the brothers of the Phi Beta Chapter of the most honorable Sigma Lambda Beta offer this scholarship. We believe that everyone deserves the chance to better themselves, regardless of their financial situation. We hope that with this aid one more person can help better their community, country, and the world.

Brotherhood: We provide a home away from home, a family base at school. We help each other stay on track with academics, work through hardships we may encounter, or are there to have fun and hang out. As brethren, we are there for each other no matter what.

Scholarship: Obtaining a college degree is our number one priority. We offer academic guidance and hold weekly study hours. We encourage high school students to attend college by tutoring and acting as liaisons between them and the University of Washington.

Community Service: To enhance oneself, we must better our community. We do everything in our power to better the communities we are a part of, be it the university community, the greater Seattle area, or the entire country itself. We raise funds for the homeless in Seattle, tutor underprivileged students, clean two main streets on campus, and raise funds for the American Diabetes Association.

Cultural Awareness: To truly seek the acceptance of all cultures in our society, we must educate and expose those cultures. We hold numerous events to promote the Latino culture on campus, and support other events that share our ideal of cultural awareness.
