Assist in recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of special education personnel.

Supervise staff in the Special Education Department.

Develop, in collaboration with local district representatives, a Bay-Arenac ISD Special Education Plan. Implement and monitor plan to assure consistent compliance.

Implement BAISDs Strategic Plan.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Administration.

Assures all special education staff are evaluated per Board Policy, labor agreement or statute.

Compensation:

The salary will be commensurate with certification and demonstrated experience of the successful candidate to fulfill the requirements of the position. (52 weeks per year)

Position Opening:

The Director of Special Education will provide leadership to the Bay and Arenac communities regarding special education programs and services.

Qualifications:

R340-1771 Director of Special Education; education and experience requirements.

For full approval, a director of special education shall possess all of the following minimum qualifications:
An earned master’s degree or equivalent.
Full approval in at least one area of special education
Three (3) years of successful professional practice or administrative experience in special education, or combination thereof.
Thirty semester or 45 term hours of graduate credit and a successful 200-clock-hour practicum in special education administration.

OR

For temporary approval, a director of special education shall possess all of the following minimum qualifications:
An earned master’s degree or equivalent.
Full approval in at least one area of special education.
Three (3) years of successful professional practice or administrative experience in education, or combination thereof.
Twelve semester or 18 term hours of graduate credit and a successful 200-clock-hour practicum in special education administration. Graduate credit shall be earned in a college or university whose program has been approved by the state board of education. The courses should assure knowledge and competency related to special education in the areas designed in subrule (1)(d) of this rule.
Recommendation from a college or university approved for the preparation of special education directors.

Ability to handle stress effectively, promote teamwork among all staff members and the community, and develop accountability structures to assure the department fulfills Bay-Arenac ISD’s Mission, Beliefs and Values, and federal and state statutes.

Performance Responsibilities:

Supervise and evaluates all programs and services in the Special Education Department of Bay-Arenac ISD.

Function as a liaison between Federal and State agencies and area educators.

Interface with community agencies in coordinating complimentary services.

Provide support and supervision to the special education administration and assigned staff.

Assure the provision professional development activities for area special education staff.

Provide support and counsel to parent organizations and other agencies concerned with special education students.
Consult with staff, parents and outside agencies regarding special education students and programs offered.

Respond to parents regarding the evaluation and placement of their children.

Assist local school district personnel in program development as requested.

Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines.

Obtain funding from the state and federal programs. Assure the submission of program documentation for approval, grant applications and financial reports. Assure the preparation and submission of program reports to agencies.

Develop and maintain special education budgets.

Promote and provide leadership for continuous improvement activities within special education.

Administer and supervise “Center” programs via the program supervisor.

Responsible for budget formulation and implementation for special education.
