Butterfly House Keeper

Job Description

The new Butterfly House is an exciting new attraction within Landmark which offers a wonderful opportunity for someone to work in a unique and highly rewarding environment.

This role would suit an enthusiastic person who has an interest in Natural History (but not compulsory) combined with the ability to enthuse others and maximise the guest experience of this special place. A friendly and outgoing disposition is absolutely paramount. An interest in horticulture will be advantageous but not necessary as training will be given. The right person will be expected to assist the lead member of staff in all of the areas of expertise required to maintain excellent standards of operation for all aspects of the Butterfly House.

Duties (not exhaustive)

  • An enthusiastic approach to the welfare of the plants in a tropical environment and general upkeep of the beds free from pests and weeds.
  • The regular release of butterflies and the monitoring of pupae.
  • Constant monitoring of butterflies, birds and general welfare.
  • Monitor and upkeep of the constant temperature of the environment whether in summer or winter.
  • General upkeep of the fish pond to agreed standards.
  • Maintenance of an hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance regime together with colleagues.
  • Undertake relevant training when and where required by management.
  • Stay abreast of general good practices as set out by management.
  • Provide regular professional input of ideas, and to be open to new developments or opportunities that may be presented by the management of the park.
  • Be able to organise and work closely with other people in the running of the Butterfly House.
  • Be able to interact and guide individuals and groups around the Butterfly House.
  • General upkeep of the immediate outside areas.
  • Be able and willing to move over to the maintenance department in the winter period if necessary.
  • Willing to work weekends on a rotational basis.
  • Any other relevant duties as required by Line Manager.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time permanent position. Wages are £8.50 per hour.

Hours of work are 40 hrs per week, normally 8.30 a.m. to to 5.00 p.m. on five out of seven days per week with occasional overtime.

Holidays are 29 days per annum.

Benefits include – after 6 months employment:

  • Membership of company group pension scheme where company pays 10% of salary into employees’ pension (Currently with Standard Life)
  • Life assurance to the amount of four times annual salary
  • Permanent health insurance covering long-term absence from work
  • Extra holidays based on length of service

Company Background

Landmark is part of Visitor Centres Ltd, a private company formed in 1969. Other sites in the group are Landmark Press, Camera Obscura World of Illusions and Inveraray Jail.

Landmark employs around 20 in winter and 100 in summer.

Landmark is a small scale theme/adventure park with an unusual mix of heritage and fun attractions. The two main types of guest who arrive at Landmark are holidaymakers from all over the UK and day trippers from home (no more than two hours away).

OperationsDepartment maintains all outdoor areas including the Butterfly House, operating the attractions, maintenance of the whole site, and the building and development of new attractions. Manager - Rob Brown.
