What are you requesting? Why is the request being made? Where was the need identified?
We are requesting funding for an existing position. The Environmental Studies IA assists with preparation of culture media and ensures that supplies, materials and equipment are available for laboratory and field activities; sets up laboratory and field activities according to the prepared schedule; returns materials, tools and equipment to designated area and cleans up all laboratory equipment after each lab/field session; assists other instructional assistants in ensuring laboratory and lab equipment are clean and well maintained according to safety and current lab practices; uses accepted safety procedures in the preparation areas, laboratories, field studies and classrooms; disposes of waste materials according to accepted safety and environmental practice standards; responds to general student questions during laboratory and field activities; monitors and reports student progress on laboratory assignments to the instructor; works with instructor in the delivery and retrieval of laboratory assignments; assists in proctoring regularly scheduled and make-up tests and lab/field practical activities; collects and organizes students’ laboratory assignments for grading and assessment by instructor; records assessment grades into grade-book and oversees return of assignments to students; sorts and files documents related to materials inventories; operates scantron and photocopy machines; duplicates class handouts, quizzes, etc. as requested prior to class meetings; posts information, assignments and labs on the course management system; and assists with making arrangements for transportation, registration, supervision, reservations and other details for field trips; attends and supports field trips as needed. The position has been unfilled due to a resignation and budget cuts. The needs of Biological Sciences department have been strained or unfilled for several years.
Section I / Demonstrate how your request is supported by your Program Review/Annual Program Assessment:
The current year Environmental Studiesprogram assessment supports this position and notes that the RAP for the previous year was unfunded.
The previous year’s Environmental Studies department fullprogram reviewrequested funding the ENVS IA II position and increasing the weekly hours to 30.
Section I / Demonstrate how your request is supported by your Unit Plan and Division Plan
This request is supported by MVC Math andSciences Unit Plan.Support for Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies lab courses (both on-sight and field-trip) at Menifee is stretched very thin. Before we lost this Environmental Science position, the IAhelped to help support field trips for four ENVS-101 sections and 100 hours of lab time per semester for two sections of ENVS-102. Currently, other IAs pitch in to help as drivers to support field trips. We have a 32-hour IA who is tasked with supporting the lab portions of BIOL-115 (online and hybrid), which have grown to cover 12 sections across the district to include SJC, TEC and SGP. MVC has two full-time IAs covering 10 face-to-face labs in BIOL-115 (4), BIOL-125 (3), BIIOL-131 (1), BIOL-144 (1), and BIOL-150 (1), which amounts to 21 hours of lab time a week, not counting preparation time. In addition, due to mounting costs of prepared media for the lab classrooms, which we cannot handle with our decreasing budgets, the Biology IAs have been engaged in the time-consuming tasks of preparing media in advance of lab use. It becomes for difficult to meet the needs of Environmental Science.
Section I / Demonstrate how your request is supported by your CLO/DLO/PL0/AUO/SLO:
An important outcome of ENVS-101 is to “consider the impact of human interactions on the environment.”To truly appreciate the impact of human behavior, students need to experience it first hand in the field. ENVS-102 is designed as a field course with the following outcomes: Applying the scientific method to environmental field investigations and assessing the influence of human interactions with the biotic and abiotic elements of the environment through field studies. Again this entails experience in the field. IA support is an absolute necessity to offer such an experience.
Section II / Describe how your request is aligned with one or more of the following Institutional Priorities: (link to SP)
Student Success
Students learn more from hands-on experience. Field trips provide greater engagement in learning.
Fiscally Sound Position:
Environmental Studies field trips utilize the college van pool. Using IAs for driving is more cost effective than hiring outside drivers and transportation.
Systematic Planning and Assessment:
The ENVS IA position takes over some of the routine planning and tasks from the instructor, so that the instructor has more time for higher level planning and assessment.
Section II / Institutional Pride and Organizational Culture:
Classes which engage students in hand-on experience foster a positive attitude toward the college.
Community Partnerships and Service
Field trips get students out into the community and build recognition..
Section III / Describe how your request will support one or more of the 12 Institutional Goals in the Strategic Plan (Strategic Plan)
Goal 3. Integrate learning, engagement, access, and teaching initiatives that support academics and personal growth. An ENVS IA will support field trips and first-hand student experience with the environment.
Goal 8. Advance and celebrate student learning, sense of community, safe and positive environment, diversity, and employee and student pride. An ENVS IA will support field trips and lab experiences which make connects between course principles and the larger community.
Goal 10. Increase the college’s visibility, value, and recognition in our service area. An ENVS IA will aid in getting students out into the community.
Section III / Demonstrate how your project goals are supported by any of the following plans (2009-16 Educational Master Plan, Distance Education Plan, Technology Plan and/or the Facilities Master Plan):
Educational Master Plan 2009-1016 identified a need to bring the ENVS IA up to a full time position.
Section III / Describe your goal(s) for this proposal? How will this impact students or institutional services?
The goals for this proposal are to fill the open ENVS IA position and take pressure off the other Biological Sciences IAs to support the ENVS program.
Section IV / What are your measureable outcomes that will lead to you meeting your goal(s)? Provide how your outcomes are tied to your CLO/DLO/PLO/AUO/SLO
A dedicated IA for Environmental Studies will take the pressure off of other Biological Sciences IAs and provide more continuity for ENVS students. A dedicated IA for ENVS-101 will help students to “consider the impact of human interactions on the environment.”A dedicated IA for ENVS-102 will help in “applying the scientific method to environmental field investigations” and “assessing the influence of human interactions with the biotic and abiotic elements of the environment through field studies.”These outcomes entail experience in the field. IA support is an absolute necessity to offer such an experience.
Section V / What are the steps that you will take or need to be taken to implement this proposal? Demonstrate the following:
• (a) Who is in charge of implementing the project?
• (b) What are the projected start and end dates?
• (c) What other departments will need to assist with the acquisition/ implementation of the project?
• (d) When will the outcomes be measured?
• (e) How will you measure the desired outcomes?
  1. The Math and Sciences instructional dean will direct the hiring process following established procedure.
  2. Pending approval of this RAP, the position will start in Fall 2013.
  3. IAs from Biological Science will orient and train the new IA.
  4. The outcomes will be measured during Spring 2014.
  5. The outcomes will be measured through CLO assessments for Environmental Studies courses.
