PC3193 EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS II

2007/2008

Semester I

General

  1. To complete the above module you have to clock up at least 60 credit hours, inclusive of 6 credit hours of oral presentation.
  1. Data Log book: For each experiment, the procedure, precautions taken, observations, data, calculations and results are to be recorded in a Laboratory Notebook. It is to be signed by a lecturer or demonstrator, at the end of each lab session, for verification of work done. The Data Log book is to be submitted at theend of your last viva.
  2. Reports: You have to perform two pre-assigned experiments ("report" experiments), for which you have to write a report each, based on the research-journal format. The report is to contain the background, theory, procedures, precautions taken, data, analyses and results of the experiment. The report must be printed on A-4 size paper on a single side.
  3. Summaries/Abstracts: Summaries, limited to one printed A-4 page (max 300 words) each, need be submitted only for the other experiments performed. The summary, whose organization and style resemble those of a typical abstract of physics research journals, should contain the objective, theory, results and conclusion. Photocopies of the relevant pages of your Laboratory Notebookareto be attached to each summary.

Procedure

  1. Complete experiment.
  2. Get a lectureror demonstrator to sign your Laboratory Notebook.
  3. At this stage, if you wish, lecturer will assign new experiment. Or new experiment may be assigned after stage 5. But see Note #3 below.
  4. Write up Report/Summary. Use coloured front cover provided.

PC3193 EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS II

2005/2006

Semester I

  1. Viva: Hand in Report/Summary to lecturer in charge of the experiment, who will then viva you. Bring Laboratory Notebook with you for the viva.
  2. If lecturer finds Report/Summary and Viva to be satisfactory, then he will "tick off" experiment in computer records. The number of hours accorded to experiment, ie. its credit hours, will then be credited to you.

Note

  1. Only experiments assigned and recorded in the computer will be recognized.
  2. Hence do not start on an experiment unless it has been assigned to you.
  3. At any one time, you are not allowed to have more than one report outstanding.
  4. If you are unable to complete an experiment within a reasonable length of time, it may be reassigned to another student.
  5. Attendance: Attend at least two lab sessions per week. Attendance list must be signed during each of the sessions you attend.
  6. Medical certificates should be handed to the technical staff in the laboratory within three working days.
