-Thanks for coming

-Suisse is also in danger of forest fires, especially the South part of Suisse

-Important to be open to share information and knowledge

-Suisse and Lichtenstein Suisse Firefighting Association, 100.000 volunteers, 1.500 professionals in big cities

-20-58 age professional fire-fighters, volunteers active till 60

-Education is the same for professional and volunteers

-Mixed financing

Marco Conedera: Research on forest fires

-Systematic approach to collecting data (establishing data base)

-More than 100 year old data

-Empirical approach

-Approach to wildland fire must be quick, preventive burning is forbidden

Item 2 Aron Ghiringelli: Forest fires in Ticino

-140.000 ha forests, 50 % of area of Ticino (1100 urban fire-fighters, 350 mountain fire-fighters, 8 private companies with buckets)

-Wildland-urban interface

-Buffer zones around houses

-Effects of forest fires are erosion, stones get mobile, precivitation does not go into the soil a few years after the fire

-You can lose the regeneration of the forest, worst-case: degeneration

-Damages are partly refunded by cantonal fund, insurance companies and people who caused the fire

-Forest service taking care of the “forest cycle” (suppression, management, prevention, organization)

-Convention with the broadcast service

-Avoid big fires

-Strategy of risk reduction

-Local government finances forest-fire-fighters

-Public institution of South France with 41 organizations- defence zones- working on prevention and suppression of natural risks (Ceren, Pont-cartography, EC ASC- education)

-3 levels of coordination

-National references for forest fires, guide for aeroplanes, standard operativ procedure for extinguishing fires, guidelines for education

-Anticipation: 6 levels of risk; by high risk the fire-fighters leave their stations, aircrafts make patrolling (tracker) and attack immediately; 5 air-bases with 11 trackers, Canadair (6.000 l) and 2 Duss (8.000 l)

-Training in ECASC Valabre, 5 levels: firefighter, leader of 4 firefighters-1 engine, other 3 levels are educated in fire-fighting school (4 vehicles, coordination with aeroplanes, 80 h); chief of sector, leading 1 hour, 80 hours education; Main chief, 3 hours, 400 ha, monitoring from air, selecting forces; 10 days lasts each training, generally 3 sectors;

-computer simulation: simultaneous 12 people; educated people from all over the world (Portugal, USA, GB)

-Themes for seminar 19.9. (9-12 h)- each presentation should last maximum 15 minutes:

-Suisse: Forest fire-fighting in alpine conditions

-Greece: Role of volunteer fighters in forest fires

-Serbia: Fire prevention (Serbian forests)

-Croatia: Analyzing hydrometheorological data during big fires
