Parent and Pupil Transition Consultation; March 2008

Parent and pupil transition consultation; March 2008

A sample of Year 7 parents and pupils from all Year 7 forms were asked to complete a questionnaire to help us to evaluate our transition between Key Stage 2 and 3.

The transition process is under constant reviewby Headteachers and Year 6 teachers from the schools, but feedback from pupils and parents is obviously very valued. The results from the questionnaires follow and the action points below will take place this year in order to respond to some of the pupil and parent feedback.

Action points for summer 2008:

  • More Year 6 visits are already taking place, and pupils have already experienced more opportunities to get to know Comprehensive staff than in previous years. Apart from the usual visits, Year 6 pupils from feeder schools came to visit the Comprehensive for the “Health bus” day, and some schools came for a bridge building event in April. Year 6 pupils have had an opportunity to attend a residential trip to Llangrannog with all feeder schools, and both Year 6 and 7 staff. Year 6 staff also visited the Comprehensive school in October to see how their pupils were settling, and Year 7 Form Tutors will visit Primary schools this half term to see the Year 6 pupils in their classrooms.
  • Year 6 pupils are also meeting Comprehensive pupils more which will hopefully allay any fears and help to boost confidence about transition. Year 10 pupils have been running Fair Trade workshops in Primary Schools; Year 13 pupils have been Sports Leaders in after school clubs in some feeder schools; Year 12 pupils attended the Llangrannog trip as prefects. Year 7 pupils have also been involved in writing leaflets for Year 6 pupils, and have made a DVD - “Transition through the eyes of Year 7 pupils” – that will be shown to them.
  • When visits take place to year 6 classes there will be a Form tutor, Mrs Ashton (Parent Pupil Support Officer), a Learning Support Assistant, Mrs Lynne Osborne (who has a community liaison role) and a group of Year 7 pupils. The Year 7 pupils will help the Year 6 pupils to become more familiar with the Comprehensive school site by showing them ‘virtual tours’ on Powerpoint presentations that they have designed themselves. The Form tutors will be taking a lesson with the Year 6 pupils in their Primary School classroom while Mrs Ashton chats to the Year 6 teacher about important information they need to pass on to the Comprehensive staff about pupils. Those staff and students will then all be available for any questions that the pupils have.
  • Parents will have an informal opportunity to ask questions after the Year 6 concert on the Transition day on July 3rd. Key staff and Mrs Ashton will be available after the event. Mrs Ashton is also available by phone and email.
