“Mathematical Explorations for Elementary Teachers”

Through the Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Department of Mathematics is offering a free 3 credit course, Mathematics Explorations for Elementary Teachers, I (MATH 175).This course is offered in spring 2007 for teachers of mathematics in the Milwaukee Public Schools to deepen their mathematics content knowledge and to enhance their mathematics instruction.

MATH 175 explores fundamental ideas in the arithmetic of whole numbers, fractions and decimals, with an emphasis on problem-solving skills and multiple solution strategies. In this offering of the course, special attention will be paid to developing number sense, basic facts, and computational fluency for all learners, as well as low-memory intensive algorithms.

Course Eligibility: The course is open to current teachers of regular and special education students in grades K-8. Participants must meet the course prerequisite of MATH 095, Essentials of Algebra, an equivalent college-level math course, or placement by a suitable score on the UW System mathematics placement test, and may be asked to provide evidence that they have satisfied the prerequisites if this is not clear from the initial application. Credit cannot be earned if you have previously taken Math 175.

Through funding from the National Science Foundation, the MMP allows for waiver of undergraduate,resident, off-campus tuition. Enrollment is limited to 30 participants. An application must be submitted no later than January 10, 2007. Late applications will not be considered. You will be notified if you have been accepted into the course. UWM course registration will be completed at the first class session.
