Applying for extended right to study

A student who has not completed his/her studies within the statutory time loses his/her right to study, unless for a special

reason the university of applied sciences grants him/her extended right to study for the purpose of completing his/her studies.

(932/2014, § 30)

Application instructions:

  • The application for extended right to study must be submitted to the study affairs office about two months beforeexpiration of the right to study.
  • In the application the student must present the special reasons that justify the application. Progress in studies may be

considered a special reason. The principle rule is that no more than 60 cr may be lacking in order to complete the degree

programme. Other special reasons may be various social reasons that have affected the student’s progress in studies.

  • A report of progress in studies must be enclosed with the application, and if necessary, also a separate study plan for

completing remaining studies. Before the application is submitted the plan should be presented to the coordinator of the

degree programme or a teacher appointed by the coordinator, who checks the appropriateness and feasibility of the plan.

  • Any earlier extensions of the right to study must be mentioned in the application. If the student has not completed the

degree programme within the previous extended study period, he/she may be granted a new extension of the right to

study period only for new special reasons.

  • A one-year extension of the right to study period may be granted at a time.
  • Extended right to study is not granted if the student has already completed the studies required for a degree.

The application is recommended by the coordinator of the degree programme / principal lecturer of the master’s degree programme. The final decision is made by head of education / head of master’s degree programmes.
