Okanagan Falls Irrigation District News

Budget Planning–A major goal of Okanagan Falls Irrigation District over the next several years is to establish sustainable rates and charges for water. “Sustainable” means that the rates and charges set for water cover all the costs for supplying water now and into the future, including the costs of renewing assets such as wells, pumps and water mains when required, as well as the costs of new projects. If the full costs of supplying water are not recovered, the system may not be able to operate safely and effectively in the present, and infrastructure such as pipes and pumps will deteriorate in the future.

To date OFID has worked with consultants from WSP Ltd. Engineering Firm to prepare an inventory of all system assets with their life expectancy, schedule for replacement and estimated replacement costs. Over the next year we should have accurate information to prepare a rate schedule for establishing a Replacement ReserveAccount for the systematic replacement of these assets.

Beginning in 2018, OFID is establishing an Operating Reserve Accountto fund operating projects such maintenance and regular upgrading of technology required to monitor the system, addressing security recommendations, short and long-term maintenance of buildings, and expenses related to malfunctions in the system (e.g. leaks, line breaks.)

Water Consumption – Water consumption was up dramatically this hot, dry summer. We are hopeful for a cooler and wetter fall. In the meantime, there are steps we can take to reduce the demands on our wells:

-Don’t let the water run when cleaning fruits and vegetables. Wash them in a partially-filled sink instead

-Wait until the dishwasher is filled before running, and save up to 10,000 litres per year.

-Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

Reduce shower time. (a ten minute shower requires 230 litres of water)

Receive Emergency Notices – Send OFID your e-mail address or sign up for the Alert on OFID website and you will receive immediate notice of any emergencies with the system.
