Documentation of financial support must be provided for dependents. Original evidence of financial support (bank statements, sponsor letter, etc.) mustaccompany this application in the following amounts:

As the F-1 student, you must ensure your dependents meet all requirements of their F-2 status as outlined below.

Application for F-2 Visa with U.S. Embassy or Consulate

In addition to the I-20, F-2 dependents must submit the following documentation to their respective U.S. Embassy or Consulate’s office when applying for an F-2 visa.

  • Original or attested true copy of marriage certificate (spouse)
  • Birth Certificate (for each child)
  • Original Financial Documentation verifying, at minimum, the amounts referenced above.
  • Demonstration of residence abroad.
  • Visa Application
  • Passport for each applicant

F-2 Dependent: Documentation Requirements

Upon arrival to the U.S. you must submit the following documentation for each dependent.

  • Copy of the I-94
  • Copy of the dependent’s passport page showing picture, biographical information and expiration date.
  • Verification of U.S. address. Please note, you must report any changes of address during your entire period of enrollment within 10 days of an address change.

F-2 Dependents: Requirements of Status

The U.S. government places several status regulations on dependents of F-1 students.

  • Education: Your dependent may not be a full-time or part-time degree seeking student. The exception to this rule applies only to minors attending elementary, middle or high school.
  • Employment: Your dependent cannot accept any form of employment (full or part-time).
  • I-20: Your dependent must maintain a copy of the I-20 at all times when traveling outside the U.S.
  • Travel: An F-2 dependent can enter the U.S. with (or after) the F-1 student, but never before.
