Course Objectives and Learning Goals:

Using a lecture and discussion teaching format, this course provides a background in the concepts, processes and institutions in the financing of business enterprises. Topics covered include: financial statement analysis;interest rates and valuing cash flows (time value of money); valuing stocks & bonds; investment decision rules and capital budgeting; risk and return (CAPM); and cost of capital. Concepts of international corporate finance are integrated throughout the course.

Required Materials:

  • Fundamentals of Corporate Finance, First Custom Edition for CSUF Finance 320, by Berk, DeMarzo, and Harford. Pearson Custom Publishing (2012) – purchase the new book package with ‘MyFinanceLab’ (used books will not have the MyFinanceLab access code)
  • Financial Calculator (Texas Instruments BA II PLUS preferred); Microsoft Excel

Prerequisite: ACCTG 201A

Classes are subject to administrative audit at anytime during the semester. Any unqualified student will be administratively dropped.

COURSE POLICIES

  1. The main purpose of the degree program at Mihaylo College of Business and Economics (MCBE) at CSU Fullerton is to provide you with the knowledge and skills that prepare you for a successful career in business. In order to assist us in achieving this goal, we will use a number of assessment tools to track your progress throughout the MCBE curriculum. Please expect to participate in MCBE assessment activities in several of your courses while at MCBE. As you do so, you will assist us in identifying our program’s strengths and weaknesses as well as areas for improvement. In other words, you are making an important investment in the value of your degree.
  1. Plus/minus grading will be used in this course. Please remember, that because FIN 320 is a College Core Course, you need a minimum grade of a C to keep from having to retake the course. You will earn the following grade if your weighted average course score falls within the following percentiles:

  1. Quizzes and Homework: Homework assignments and quizzes are administered through MyFinanceLab. 14 of the 16 quizzes and homework will be counted toward your grade (the 4 lowest scores will be dropped at the end of the term). See instructions at the end of this document to register at

A sample Valuation Exam and a sample Department Final exam will be available on the Finance Department FIN320 webpage at: The Valuation Exam is a departmental requirement and will be administered through MyFinanceLab. You will be allowed 2 attempts, and your best grade is recorded.The Guide to Finance 320 in the textbook, contains information about these exams.
  3. A formula sheet will be provided to you during the exams. No other notes (“cheat sheet”) will be allowed.
  4. Exams:MAKE-UP EXAMS ARE NOT GIVEN. You must take the exams as scheduled.

The Valuation Exam and Comprehensive Final Exam are departmental requirements. Students will be given two chances to pass the Valuation exam. Students who do not pass the first exam with 76% accuracy will take a second version of the exam. Samples of the Valuation Exam and Final Exam are available on the Finance Department Fin320 webpage at:

  1. Notes are not allowed during the exams – A study guide will be available prior to each exam and a formula sheet will be provided with each exam.
